Beauty IQ Uncensored Episode 24 Transcript - 'Lash Extensions VS Lash Lifts'

Hannah Furst:
Welcome everybody to Beauty IQ the podcast.

Joanna Flemming:
I'm your host, Joanna Flemming.

Hannah Furst:
And I am your co-host, Hannah Furst. So we're just going to start this episode with a little update on our memes.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah.

Hannah Furst:
So we spoke about a meme last week or-

Joanna Flemming:
Nah, it was a few weeks ago.

Hannah Furst:
A few weeks ago. And there's this meme that this girl tweets, "Every woman's biggest nightmare is late marriage". And then another girl writes back and says, "Mine is sitting on a toilet and a hidden snake attacks my vagina, but okay". And so I've had two DMs this week about this meme. So the first one, Jo, do you want to talk about that girl that sent you that message?

Joanna Flemming:
Yes. So someone messaged me on Instagram, actually it might've been to Adore, and I just saw it. She wrote back to our leech in the eye topic because we were talking about leeches on vaginas.

Hannah Furst:
I said please DM us if you've had a leech on your vagina, as a joke.

Joanna Flemming:
She wrote back, "Oh my God LOL. I went hiking in the bush with my ex-boyfriend once and I legit got to the top of the mountain, bent down to stretch my legs, and there was legit a leech on my vagina, stuck to my tights, but trying to latch on". There you go, ladies, it's happened. So that is an update for you on leeches.

Hannah Furst:
And then we also both got a DM last night, and this girl sent us a message and it said, "Meanwhile in Phuket", and there's actually a snake in a toilet.

Joanna Flemming:
Being pulled out. Imagine discovering that.

Hannah Furst:
Oh my God. And I was just in Thailand. That gives me heebie jeebies.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah. Is that why it's a fear of yours? Because you stay in those kinds of places?

Hannah Furst:
No, that wasn't my fear. I just really liked that meme. Because my biggest fear is not late marriage. You fear that?

Joanna Flemming:
Not really, but I'm concerned of being a cat lady because I think I could be. I think I already am.

Hannah Furst:
But that's okay. I think you already are. What's on this episode, Joanna?

Joanna Flemming:
So on today's episode, I've got a surprise for you, Hannah.

Hannah Furst:
Okay. I surprises.

Joanna Flemming:
We're discussing nose hair, but I've got an actual surprise for you. We're going to do something on air that you aren't aware of.

Hannah Furst:
Okay, I'm always up for anything on air. Seriously.

Joanna Flemming:
We'll see.

Hannah Furst:
We'll see.

Joanna Flemming:
And then we're also talking about lash lifts and lash extensions, and we get a lot of questions about those. And of course, our products we didn't know we needed.

Hannah Furst:
So today's cringey convo, we are talking about nose hair.

Joanna Flemming:
Yes. That we are. And as I said, I've got a surprise for you, Hannah.

Hannah Furst:
I'm excited. Love surprises.

Joanna Flemming:
So our guest that's going to be chatting about lashes has come in early with a little something.

Hannah Furst:
Okay.

Joanna Flemming:
You said to me the other day at our desk, I was talking about my nose hair, and you were , "Oh yeah, I get heaps of nose hair too".

Hannah Furst:
Yeah, visible.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah. Mine's visible too, and had a little bit of it lasered, but I'm not going to go back and have two zaps of laser, it's a waste of time. Anyway, so I asked Jenna to bring her wax pot.

Hannah Furst:
Oh my God.

Joanna Flemming:
And we're going to wax the inside of our noses.

Hannah Furst:
Oh my god.

Joanna Flemming:
Will you do it?

Hannah Furst:
I'm really excited.

Joanna Flemming:
Oh my God. I thought you'd be freaked out.

Hannah Furst:
No way.

Joanna Flemming:
I thought you'd be like, "No, not doing it".

Hannah Furst:
No, up for anything.

Joanna Flemming:
Oh, okay, great. Yeah. I've never had this done.

Hannah Furst:
Can I just say, this is great content. I love everything about this. I love it.

Joanna Flemming:
We're going keep our microphones rolling, and we'll film ourselves as well. So you can head to our Instagram stories to see what we're doing.

Hannah Furst:
@adorebeauty.

Joanna Flemming:
Yes. So yeah, as I said, I've had laser on the sides of my nose on the inside. It's just the way my nose is shaped. I feel like you can always see my nose hair, and it does my head in.

Hannah Furst:
For a really long time, I would just borrow my dad's nose trimmer. Do you know-

Joanna Flemming:
I never thought to do that.

Hannah Furst:
Men have those ear and nose trimmers?

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah.

Hannah Furst:
Yeah, it's not a razor. It's just a trimmer. And you just stick it up your nose and it trims all the hair.

Joanna Flemming:
Does it hurt?

Hannah Furst:
No.

Joanna Flemming:
It doesn't pull on it, it shaves the hair.

Hannah Furst:
Yeah. Yeah, because it's shaped in a way that you can get in there and it just shaves-

Joanna Flemming:
Well, if I don't like this waxing, maybe I'll get a nose trimmer. Why didn't I think of that before? I've used scissors.

Hannah Furst:
So the thing is you've got to get a good quality one. Because he has a really good quality one. I think we got it for Christmas or something. We got him a really expensive nose and ear trimmer.

Joanna Flemming:
That's when you know you're becoming an old man.

Hannah Furst:
And so I then bought myself one, but I cheaped out and I got a really cheap and nasty one.

Joanna Flemming:
I was just thinking I'll go to Kmart.

Hannah Furst:
Well, no, it broke within three uses. It was done.

Joanna Flemming:
You went too vigorous with it.

Hannah Furst:
And then I basically just-

Joanna Flemming:
Were you using it for other areas?

Hannah Furst:
No. Yeah, for my anus. Actually, that's a good idea. You could totally use a nose trimmer.

Joanna Flemming:
Let's not recommended it to the people. Let's just keep that between you and me.

Hannah Furst:
Do not do that at home. I feel like I have to say that in case anyone ...

Joanna Flemming:
You have to say that with a lot of things.

Hannah Furst:
Where was it?

Joanna Flemming:
Oh, someone messaged us. After the episode about bleaching, someone messaged us and said, "Oh, I bleached my bum hole with actual bleach, and it went badly.

Hannah Furst:
You cannot do that.

Joanna Flemming:
It went very badly.

Hannah Furst:
So that's why I make sure I always say, don't do this at home.

Joanna Flemming:
Don't try this at home, people.

Hannah Furst:
So just use that one in your nose hair. But then I kind of stopped doing it, and to be honest, no one noticed, so I've just let the hair grow. It doesn't grow that long.

Joanna Flemming:
You can't really see yours, though.

Hannah Furst:
Have you noticed my nose hair before?

Joanna Flemming:
No, I never noticed it.

Hannah Furst:
I think it's the things that we pick out ourselves that we nitpick on our face, but no one else. It's like when I have a hair that pops up on my neck, and I'm like, "Oh, it's been there for ..." It's long, and I'm like, "Oh my God, everyone's noticed that one rogue long hair."

Joanna Flemming:
And I'm very close to you, and I've never noticed a hair.

Hannah Furst:
Yeah, so I might have one on my neck, and it'll be really long. So it's been growing for months.

Joanna Flemming:
And I get those ones under my arms, and then I wear a top I'm wearing today. I'm like, "Ooh!"

Hannah Furst:
And you won't notice it, and then you're like, "Oh my God, everyone's been looking at it", but no one's noticed it. Yeah. All right.

Joanna Flemming:
All right, let's do this. So Jenna's going to stick a [crosstalk 00:06:12] up our noses with wax on it.

Hannah Furst:
So what we're going to do is; we're just going to record this.

Joanna Flemming:
It might sound weird.

Hannah Furst:
It might sound, go to our Instagram stories. We'll post it the day that this episode comes out so that you can listen and then go and see the whole process of what it's like to get your nose waxed. Okay, I'm ready. This is my fist nose wax. Oh my God.

Jenna Lambert:
So just tilting your head a little bit more.

Joanna Flemming:
Oh my god. It's so big. Oh my god. I actually hurt. This is so ridiculous. Jo, do you want to explain on air what's happening right now?

Joanna Flemming:
So Hannah's got a ice cream stick up her nose with wax on it, and it just looks like you've got ... It looks kind of like you've put an ice cream up your nose, to be honest.

Hannah Furst:
It kind of look like I've had a blood nose and I've put a tampon up there with a really long string.

Joanna Flemming:
Oh yeah, it does, yeah. But you don't sound any different recording.

Hannah Furst:
Are you sure?

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah. Is this going to be really painful?

Hannah Furst:
I don't know.

Joanna Flemming:
All right. We've both got our Popsicle sticks in.

Hannah Furst:
Yep.

Joanna Flemming:
Oh!

Hannah Furst:
Oh! [inaudible 00:07:22] shit.

Joanna Flemming:
Oh my god show me. Show me Hannah.

Hannah Furst:
Oh my God, I can't. I don't want it on camera. I can't.

Joanna Flemming:
Hold it up. We didn't do this for no reason. Oh, wow.

Hannah Furst:
Oh my God. I can't. I can't look at it any longer.

Joanna Flemming:
This has been fun.

Hannah Furst:
Oh my God.

Joanna Flemming:
You did that really well. Now I don't want to go.

Hannah Furst:
You've go to yank it.

Jenna Lambert:
Ready for the other side?

Hannah Furst:
Yep. Okay.

Joanna Flemming:
Oh my god I'm scared. Oh! Oh, I can breathe so clearly.

Hannah Furst:
Can I see it? Yeah. There you go. Oh, yeah. Look at that.

Joanna Flemming:
Damn, that feels fresh. I'll add this into my regular beauty routine.

Hannah Furst:
I think this is the best cringey convo we've ever done.

Joanna Flemming:
I agree.

Hannah Furst:
What a great idea.

Joanna Flemming:
See? I didn't know if you'd been to it.

Hannah Furst:
No. I mean, I don't know if I'm into it.

Joanna Flemming:
Because you told me the other day that you had a lot of nose hair, and I was like, "Oh, okay".

Hannah Furst:
I did. I do have a lot of nose hair. You'll have to go on Instagram to see what's actually happening.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah, Hannah's having her second one removed.

Hannah Furst:
But I know ... Oh!

Joanna Flemming:
It's so forceful. Jenna, do you get some pleasure out of doing that?

Jenna Lambert:
It's amazing.

Hannah Furst:
Oh my god, there's so much hair.

Joanna Flemming:
Wow. Wait, show me a close up.

Jenna Lambert:
I think the other one was worse.

Hannah Furst:
Yeah. Okay.

Jenna Lambert:
I'm just going to check underneath.

Joanna Flemming:
All right. You're not actually ripping it out, are you? Don't try and trick me. I'm paranoid.

Jenna Lambert:
That's usually what I'll do. If my client's on the bed, I'll just have a conversation and just [crosstalk 00:09:11].

Joanna Flemming:
Oh, really? Don't. I can see you coming closer, don't try and ... I feel like you're going to grab it out of nowhere. Oh! She got me again.

Jenna Lambert:
You don't have so much [crosstalk 00:09:23].

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah, on the inside I do.

Hannah Furst:
What did you think of that?

Joanna Flemming:
I feel fresh.

Hannah Furst:
My nose feels really fresh.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah, I can breathe so clearly, but I feel naked inside my nose.

Hannah Furst:
It's really weird. But I do have a bit of a runny nose from the heat.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah. So do I. Yeah. Yeah, a little bit. I think it's just the whole mixture of things that make your nose runny.

Hannah Furst:
I think I'm going to do that all the time.

Joanna Flemming:
I think I might as well. [crosstalk 00:09:45].

Hannah Furst:
I think I was expecting her to put a tiny little bit of wax into a little wax strip, but she actually shoved a whole bit of wax up there.

Joanna Flemming:
Have you never seen this be done?

Hannah Furst:
Never.

Joanna Flemming:
Oh, I see it all the time.

Hannah Furst:
That's why I thought it was so weird when she put the whole wax up my nose. I did not know.

Joanna Flemming:
I shouldn't have assumed you knew.

Hannah Furst:
No.

Joanna Flemming:
Oh, so you were terrified. You were like, is she putting wax in my brain?

Hannah Furst:
I really liked how quickly she pulled it out.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah, she didn't hesitate. She was like, "I'm doing it now".

Hannah Furst:
That was like element of surprise. I liked it.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah, you really need that when you're doing waxing.

Hannah Furst:
I think so. Well, that was a really fun experience. That was a great cringey conversation, and I didn't even know that was happening.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah, so surprise!

Hannah Furst:
Surprise, no more nose hair. Hey Jo, we have news, don't we?

Joanna Flemming:
Yes we do. Tell us.

Hannah Furst:

Joanna Flemming:
Just search for Adore Beauty on YouTube and subscribe so you never miss a video. Okay. So this is a topic that I personally get a lot of questions about because I have both these services done, lash lifts and lash extensions. So I asked Jenna from the beauty company to come in because I go to her salon to have my lashes done. Welcome Jenna.

Jenna Lambert:
Thank you. Happy to be here.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah, I feel like it's been a long time coming. I think I've had it in the back of my mind. "We need to get Jenna on here to talk about lashes".

Jenna Lambert:
We've had a lot of conversations.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah. And also, I just started using EyEnvy, and I'm waiting for my eyelashes to go crazy. But lash lifts. This is something I have done all the time. Hannah, do you ever get anything done to your eyelashes or anything?

Hannah Furst:
Never, and I have had a lash lift once. I found the whole thing bizarre.

Joanna Flemming:
Why?

Hannah Furst:
Just the pulling [crosstalk 00:11:42].

Joanna Flemming:
They can't see you.

Hannah Furst:
I know they can't see me. You know when your lashes are glued, it just feels weird.

Joanna Flemming:
It does feel a bit weird.

Hannah Furst:
It feels like for me, maybe it's a lot of effort.

Joanna Flemming:
Well, your lashes are quite curled anyway.

Hannah Furst:
I feel like I can get the same result from wearing mascara.

Jenna Lambert:
Okay, have you ever had extensions?

Hannah Furst:
Yes. Also a lot of effort.

Jenna Lambert:
Yeah.

Joanna Flemming:
When was that? I can't imagine you having eyelash extensions.

Hannah Furst:
Oh my God. And I went for the longest ones possible, and then I went into work and as soon as I saw everyone at the office, "I know, I know. Don't say anything". Every single person at the office was like "Uh". And they were about to be like, "What the fuck have you done to your face?" And I was like, "I know, don't". And I just walked around. I just wanted them gone.

Joanna Flemming:
And that was the only time you had them?

Hannah Furst:
They touched my eyebrows.

Joanna Flemming:
Well, that was your own fault. I went into Jenna, and I was like, "I want the most natural ones possible. I cannot look like I've got eyelashes on", and she certainly delivered. But my usual thing is to go for a lash lift because I find extensions, they are a lot of work and they are expensive. So Hannah doesn't like them being glued back onto her eyelid. So for people that haven't had it done and are traumatized by that thought, can you tell us a bit about the process?

Jenna Lambert:
Sure. So to start off with, we'll cleanse the eye, make sure there's no oils left on the skin or the eyelash. Then we place a collagen eye pad underneath the eye, which essentially holds down your lower lashes so that we don't then curl those up because that would be terrible. We apply with a water soluble glue, a rod to the eyelid and then that's where we glue the natural lash to the rod. Once those lashes are kind of in place and we've kind of perfected them and fanned them out nicely, we'll then apply the perming solution, leave that on for a few minutes and then follow with the rest of the steps. So you've got your permanent solution, your setting lotion. Some brands will also do a hydrating oil, so depending on whether it's a keratin lift or just a perming lift. And then we'll also tint and then remove everything.

Joanna Flemming:
What's the difference between a keratin lift and a normal lift?

Jenna Lambert:
So a keratin lift essentially puts a lot more hydration back into the lash. Obviously our hair being keratin, it's a lot healthier. However, I find that the results aren't as good. So the perming solution is the original formulation, so you get much more of a curl and longer lasting results.

Joanna Flemming:
And how is the lash lift different to back in the day when we used to do lash perms and it was a metal rod or something?

Jenna Lambert:
So some places would use a metal rod, some would use a cardboard rod, but it was completely round, whereas now it's got that curve. And we don't apply the solution to the whole lash. So we just apply it either from the base up or just in the center so that you get that lift and not that entire curl.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah, because I remember one of our mutual friends had hers done at the clinic we were working at, and it was the old school version and it was big regrets. It was not good.

Jenna Lambert:
She's got tiny lashes as it is.

Joanna Flemming:
It was not good. So what would you say is the better treatment? For someone that's more low maintenance, you would definitely go for a lash lift?

Jenna Lambert:
Yes, but they have to have a lash to work with. So someone like our friend, very tiny lashes.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah, not ideal. Okay. So she should opt for lash extensions. Okay. So if you're wanting fullness and length, you would go for an extension. And if you've already got long straight lashes like you and I, we would go for a lift.

Jenna Lambert:
A lift, that's right.

Hannah Furst:
I loved the lift, by the way.

Joanna Flemming:
Oh, you liked the result, you just didn't like the process?

Hannah Furst:
Oh, I didn't mind the process. It was a lot of effort for someone like me, who can kind of ... I feel like I can get that result with mascara.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah, see, my lashes just goes dead straight and forward and they don't curl. Even if I use a lash curler, they just refuse to cooperate.

Hannah Furst:
I don't even use a lash curler. If I use the right mascara-

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah, you've got great lashes, actually.

Hannah Furst:
The one thing I have better than you Jo, literally. The one thing. Lashes.

Joanna Flemming:
Except when you use mascara, it has to be waterproof. Otherwise you'll get panda eyes. So I had extensions recently and I also got addicted to that and I had to wean myself off, as you know, I was like, "No, no, no, no".

Jenna Lambert:
I wasn't expecting you to take them off.

Joanna Flemming:
Really? Yeah, I really had to just be like, no, I can't do this anymore. I'm trying to buy a house. I can't keep up with this.

Jenna Lambert:
Lashes/house, lashes/house.

Joanna Flemming:
Exactly. And look, it is a very fine line, yeah. So I came in and I had them removed properly. But you said a lot of people leave them on until they all fall off. I just couldn't have done that.

Jenna Lambert:
Or pull them out.

Joanna Flemming:
And I couldn't have done that.

Hannah Furst:
That's what I did.

Joanna Flemming:
Of course you did. Of course you did. You didn't even need to say that.

Hannah Furst:
It was actually really satisfying.

Joanna Flemming:
Because you'd already pulled out half your lashes?

Hannah Furst:
Just sitting on the couch and just picking it slowly until it [crosstalk 00:16:26] Yeah.

Joanna Flemming:
So I found that when I had them professionally removed, which I think was probably the best option for me because it would have driven me nuts if I had to wait for a few lashes still hanging on. I found that my lashes were a little bit thinner afterwards, which is why I got the EyEnvy stuff. Do you find that happens to a lot of people, that their lashes might be thinner or shorter after they've had extension?

Jenna Lambert:
So I feel like there's a lot of myths when it comes to lash extensions, and do they actually damage your natural lash? I'm going to say no. I've been doing lashes for over 10 years, having them done on myself for half that time. And I've had my fair share of lifts as well. I think that if you are one to touch them, then definitely you're going to damage your natural lash. We've also got to remember that our natural lash compared to an extension is a lot thinner, is a lot shorter and is a lot straighter. So when we're used to having these thick curly black things on our eyelashes and then all of a sudden they're gone, all of them, it can be a bit confronting. And it can make it look like, "I'm bald. I've got nothing left".

Joanna Flemming:
That's how I felt.

Jenna Lambert:
Also, they are stuck to your natural lash. So as we have our lash cycle and they do fall out every couple of weeks or so, sometimes a lash is going to come out with it. That's inevitable. Even if you don't have extensions on, our lashes still fall out. But a new lash-

Joanna Flemming:
Make a wish.

Jenna Lambert:
Yeah. A new lash is usually growing behind it. So I wouldn't say that it thins them out or it damages them or it will affect the growth unless, like I said, you're pulling them out. I think it's more an illusion that we've gone from having these long curly things on, to not.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah, maybe my brain was playing tricks on me. I didn't feel like the lashes damaged my natural eyelashes at all cause I brushed them and I took really good care of them and I used Bioderma around my eye to remove my makeup.

Hannah Furst:
Sounds like a lot of effort.

Joanna Flemming:
It was, but it was so worth it. Oh, I look so good with them on, and you wake up and you're just like, "Oh, I'm ready". But I can't keep up with the cost. We had an optometrist in recently and we asked her. You might've listened to that episode.

Jenna Lambert:
Yeah, I did listen.

Joanna Flemming:
If there's been an increase in people getting infections or anything around their eye. Do you find that you get clients come in and you're like, "Ooh, they haven't removed their makeup properly, or they're using mascara over them".

Jenna Lambert:
Yeah, and then they tell us that they're not, but we can clearly see because it's built up. I think that yeah, it's self inflicted because you can definitely take care of your lashes. Yes, it takes more time. But if you're already doing a beauty routine at night, it's one extra step.

Hannah Furst:
What is the extra step?

Jenna Lambert:
So we've got lash cleansers, they're foaming cleansers that you'll pump onto a little cotton pad. You can either get a brush that comes with it or you can also use a little-

Joanna Flemming:
Spoolie thing.

Jenna Lambert:
Yeah. And just brush gently at the eyelash. Obviously keep your eye closed because it is essentially a cleanser. If it gets in your eye, it will sting a little bit, but you literally just do one eye at a time, brush it through. It will get any dead skin that kind of builds up at the base of the lash. Any makeup, any oil residue, and just clear it away.

Hannah Furst:
How long should they last for, lash extensions?

Jenna Lambert:
Without refilling?

Hannah Furst:
Yeah.

Jenna Lambert:
It all depends on what sort of set you're having done. So if you're coming in for a classic set, which is what you had Jo, just one extension per natural lash. And obviously the sizes of the lash vary. They should last up to six weeks without being refilled before they've all completely fallen out.

Hannah Furst:
Oh, that's actually pretty good.

Jenna Lambert:
It all depends on, like I said, the size and length of the lash because if you have something thicker and longer, then essentially it's a lot heavier on your natural lash and it doesn't last as long.

Joanna Flemming:
I found that at three weeks, I probably could have gone another week and they still looked okay. They weren't as good as when I first had them done, but I could have gotten away with it not looking gross. What shouldn't you do if you have eyelash extensions, apart from plucking them out of your eyes like someone over here?

Jenna Lambert:
Definitely don't pluck them out. I would avoid applying stick on lashes on top. Some people do that.

Joanna Flemming:
Really?

Jenna Lambert:
They'll go for a natural look for during the week and then come the weekend, they want that glam. And so they add lashes on top. Obviously glue gets stuck, and if they're not cleaning them properly, then it's a disaster. Same with makeup.

Hannah Furst:
That's so interesting that people do that.

Jenna Lambert:
Yeah, people do that. Same with applying mascara. It kind of clumps your lash with the extension, and they're already combined. It doesn't create a fuller look, it just makes them look clumpy.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah. And in terms of cleaning them, as you said, you've got a foaming cleanser that you can use on your lashes or I used Bioderma. Is it true that you shouldn't use an oil cleanser?

Jenna Lambert:
That's right.

Joanna Flemming:
Which a lot of people do to remove makeup.

Jenna Lambert:
Yes. So oil will break the bond of the glue and separate the lash. So it just will mean that you're coming in more regularly for refills or they're just not lasting.

Joanna Flemming:
So could you use an oil cleanser at home to remove them yourself?

Jenna Lambert:
You can try. A lot of people will steam their lashes and then apply a coconut oil or just a straight oil and try and get some of them off. You end up still pulling some of them out because you get frustrated and you're just like, I want to get them off. But it all depends on how many you've got left on there as well. If you've only got a couple, then go for it. Give it a go.

Joanna Flemming:
What's in the solution that I had to take them off?

Jenna Lambert:
That's a great question.

Joanna Flemming:
Is it just something that separates the glue or something?

Jenna Lambert:
Yeah, de-bonds-

Joanna Flemming:
Chemicals, things that probably shouldn't be in your eyes.

Jenna Lambert:
I normally explain to my clients that when we do it, if you open your eye it's like death in your eye.

Joanna Flemming:
Oh, yeah. It was a bit sting-y but I'm glad that I just had them taken off and I was done with it.

Jenna Lambert:
Yeah, we don't apply it obviously to the skin, it is just applied on the lash. And usually, if you haven't just had them refilled or just had them put on, the extension isn't applied right to the lash line. So it's a little bit further up so it's not as dangerous.

Joanna Flemming:
What do you recommend for anyone who has had their lashes fall out and they're looking a bit sparse, whether it's from a bad experience with extensions. Because I follow a few things on Instagram. I'm bad on Instagram with my videos, you know me, but I've seen quite a few disastrous eyelash extensions. Do you often get people coming in that have had bad experiences and you're like, oh, how can we bring you back?

Jenna Lambert:
Yeah, and usually they'll come in with the lashes still on and we're like, we can't work with this. Take them off, come back a couple of days later and then let's start again.

Joanna Flemming:
Okay. So do you put extensions on those people or are you like, let's have a break from it and use the lash serum or something?

Jenna Lambert:
Yeah, it depends. So on our Instagram page, we've actually got a before and after of a client who had a lot of lash extensions and literally, she was going for that Russian look, where there's six per natural lash.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah, that's not for me.

Jenna Lambert:
But the place that she was having them done, weren't actually using a Russian lash. They were just piling six classic lashes on top of each other. It was so bad. And so-

Joanna Flemming:
Do you find a lot of places do that, or is that the first case where you've seen that happened?

Jenna Lambert:
I've probably seen it happen a handful of times. Now that Russian is a lot more popular, people kind of know-

Hannah Furst:
So what's Russian?

Jenna Lambert:
So a Russian extension is a volume extension. So rather than having one classic lash applied to your natural lash, there'll be six.

Joanna Flemming:
You know those girls that you see that look like they've got a broom on their eyelashes? It's like that. Like the end of a broom.

Hannah Furst:
Yeah.

Jenna Lambert:
Yeah, they need something motorized to make them [crosstalk 00:23:36] so we've got a before and after of this client who had come in. She wanted us to do her lashes and we said no way. We took the lashes off. She had, I reckon, 10 lashes left. It was terrible. She used EyEnvy for, I think it was one month. Correct me if I'm wrong. And then we took a photo of the after and just the amount of extra lashes that she had. I mean, we still wanted her to continue because we could have put some natural lashes on but they wouldn't have lasted very long and it would've looked really sparse.

Hannah Furst:
So brow lamination is similar to a lash lift for your brows?

Jenna Lambert:
Yes.

Hannah Furst:
Now, that's what I want.

Joanna Flemming:
Neither of us have had it done. Would you actually have that?

Hannah Furst:
Oh my God, I really want to get it done.

Joanna Flemming:
But you don't like filling in your eyebrows.

Hannah Furst:
I want them to sit up and fluffy. Yeah. Because when I was at the airport on the way to Thailand, I actually bought the Benefit 24 hour Brow Setter, and I was brushing my brows up and I loved it. But I'd want the brow-

Joanna Flemming:
But the direction is kind of downwards though, from what I can see.

Hannah Furst:
Yeah, but that's what I want.

Joanna Flemming:
Does that make a difference? If the brow direction naturally is kind of ... Because mine come down a little bit on my arch as well.

Jenna Lambert:
But your lashes are also very straight. We permed them in the direction we want them to go.

Joanna Flemming:
One of us is going to have to try brow lamination.

Hannah Furst:
I will.

Joanna Flemming:
Okay, Jenna, we're both coming in. We'll film it.

Hannah Furst:
I really want to get my brows laminated.

Joanna Flemming:
So, is it true that they just brush them up and then they use the same perming solution, or is it different?

Jenna Lambert:
I have used the same perming solution. I think it's a little bit too drying on the brow.

Hannah Furst:
Okay. So how does the brow ... All I've seen on Instagram is glad wrap.

Jenna Lambert:
Yeah, I don't use glad wrap. It's too messy. Some brands will tell you to glue the brow in place and then apply the solution. You leave it on for a little bit less time than you do your eyelashes, but it's essentially the same process. Some places will say to put glad wrap just to hold the solution in place. But I mean, unless your client's rolling around, they're not moving the solution anyway. So I don't use it. I think it just gets annoying.

Joanna Flemming:
Does it leave the brows crunchy?

Jenna Lambert:
I don't think so.

Joanna Flemming:
Okay. So they're still quite soft and you just brush them up in the morning and they go back to the shape they're meant to be?

Hannah Furst:
Or they stay brushed out?

Jenna Lambert:
Some cases they'll stay brushed out. It all depends on your client's brow. If they've got a thick, coarse brow, they might need a little bit help. But people usually have it done so that they don't have to fiddle with them.

Hannah Furst:
Has this been around for ages and it's just ... Or it's a new thing?

Jenna Lambert:
No, it's fairly new.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah. I only started seeing it, again, I see everything on Instagram, just before Christmas, I think.

Hannah Furst:
And lash lifts, I feel like are the same. Because I'd never heard of a lash lift.

Joanna Flemming:
Until when?

Hannah Furst:
When you got it done.

Joanna Flemming:
What, the other day?

Hannah Furst:
No, a few months ago. Six months ago.

Joanna Flemming:
Oh, really?

Hannah Furst:
Yeah.

Joanna Flemming:
No, I've been having lash lifts for probably two years.

Jenna Lambert:
I've been doing them for maybe four or five. Yeah, they've been around for a little while.

Joanna Flemming:
Welcome to the party. Actually no, it would be longer than two years, I reckon. Four years probably.

Hannah Furst:
How often do [crosstalk 00:26:32] how often do you get them done?

Joanna Flemming:
I get mine done probably every 10 weeks, I reckon.

Jenna Lambert:
Yeah, something like that.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah, because I like to let them kind of fully grow out because they go a bit crazy as they're growing out towards the end. And then I have them done fresh.

Hannah Furst:
That's actually pretty good, 10 weeks. And then when I put mascara on, oh, they look so good.

Jenna Lambert:
You don't usually tint when you have your lash lift, do you?

Joanna Flemming:
Not usually, no, but I think I might start because I feel like I've noticed they're a little bit blonde on the ends.

Jenna Lambert:
Yeah. I think you'll find that they'll look even longer.

Hannah Furst:
People noticed when I had it done because I had them tinted as well. My mum got a lash lift straight away afterwards.

Joanna Flemming:
Maybe you should've got your lash lift for the wedding.

Hannah Furst:
But I'm doing fake eyelashes.

Joanna Flemming:
Oh, yeah. Okay.

Hannah Furst:
Yeah. And I actually think she said not to get a lash lift-

Joanna Flemming:
If you're doing fake eyelashes.

Hannah Furst:
If you're doing strip lashes.

Jenna Lambert:
Hard to stick them on.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah, it is hard to stick them on. [crosstalk 00:27:26].

Jenna Lambert:
Depending on how high they are.

Hannah Furst:
The email that I got from the makeup artist was; do not get a lash lift because we can't get the eyelash strip on.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah. Well, thanks for joining us, Jenna.

Jenna Lambert:
Thanks for having me.

Joanna Flemming:
It was a pleasure to have you in here. We'll have to bring you back somehow for something else.

Jenna Lambert:
Take your pick.

Hannah Furst:
Okay, so the product we didn't know we needed. We've both chosen lip balms today.

Joanna Flemming:
Stop copying me.

Hannah Furst:
I actually did copy you. I did. I saw what you chose and I was like, oh, okay. I have no creativity whatsoever.

Joanna Flemming:
So mine is the Giorgio Armani Ecstasy Balm in shade 2. I always have this balm in my handbag. Obsessed with it.

Hannah Furst:
It looks bloody expensive.

Joanna Flemming:
It is, but yeah, how much is it? I don't know. 60 something, maybe?

Hannah Furst:
Yeah, it's an expensive balm.

Joanna Flemming:
But it is luxe.

Hannah Furst:
No.

Joanna Flemming:
How much is it?

Hannah Furst:
It's 49.

Joanna Flemming:
Oh, bargain.

Hannah Furst:
Cheap. Lip balm, $49, that is cheap.

Joanna Flemming:
Nothing. Anyway, so I use the shade 2. It's a really natural pink. So on my lips it just enhances my natural lip color. Super glossy, hydrating. It's just gorge. And it comes in really, really nice packaging as well. You know those, have you got a Giorgio Armani lipstick? How it's got the magnet?

Hannah Furst:
Yeah, love it.

Joanna Flemming:
It's so expensive and heavy.

Hannah Furst:
Yeah. Love it.

Joanna Flemming:
You know you've spent $49 on it. So yeah, that's mine. What's yours?

Hannah Furst:
So my lip balm's also quite expensive.

Joanna Flemming:
How much is yours?

Hannah Furst:
$34.

Joanna Flemming:
Oh no, that's fine. That's standard.

Hannah Furst:
Is it?

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah. If you're not shopping at a chemist, that's normal.

Hannah Furst:
No, because I usually use Lano.

Joanna Flemming:
But even Lano is like, $18.95.

Hannah Furst:
Is it?

Joanna Flemming:
I think so.

Hannah Furst:
Yeah. It lasts a long time.

Joanna Flemming:
It does, yeah.

Hannah Furst:
Lip balms do last a long time, but this one's a special lip balm. This is a CBD lip balm. It's by Smith & Cult. It's called Locked & Lit CBD lip balm. It's really cute because when I first got it on my desk, I was like, hmm. Green lip balm. I'm not sure about this. It's in a green pot and it's green colored. It goes on clear. So it is infused with Cannabidy oil?

Joanna Flemming:
Is that legal?

Hannah Furst:
It says infused with hemp-derived ... Cannabid.

Joanna Flemming:
Cannabid oil?

Hannah Furst:
Cannabid oil?

Joanna Flemming:
I think that's how you say it.

Hannah Furst:
Are you sure?

Joanna Flemming:
I don't know.

Hannah Furst:
I feel like we need to look that up. Do you know what would be really funny right now?

Joanna Flemming:
If you do that translate thing to it?

Hannah Furst:
Yes. Cannabid oil. So you think it's Cannabid oil?

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah.

Hannah Furst:
Okay.

Speaker 4:
Cannabidiol.

Joanna Flemming:
I was close.

Hannah Furst:
Cannabidiol?

Joanna Flemming:
Go again.

Speaker 4:
Cannabidiol.

Joanna Flemming:
Cannabidiol.

Hannah Furst:
Once more, come on.

Speaker 4:
Cannabidiol.

Joanna Flemming:
Oh, yeah. It's I O L, not O I L.

Hannah Furst:
Cannabidiol.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah.

Hannah Furst:
All right.

Joanna Flemming:
So it doesn't have an oi sound, it has an io sound.

Hannah Furst:
Cannabidiol. So, infused with hemp-derived Cannabidiol. It's buttery and it's quite thick. But you know, lip balms, I struggle with lip balms because they have foul tastes sometimes.

Joanna Flemming:
Yes. Yeah. An aftertaste.

Hannah Furst:
There's always, particularly an SPF lip balm. I just don't like the taste of them.

Joanna Flemming:
Yep.

Hannah Furst:
So this one doesn't have any taste to it. I think it's actually got apple seed oil in it.

Joanna Flemming:
So it doesn't have any traces of THC, does it? The element of cannabis that has ...

Hannah Furst:
Isn't that illegal here?

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah.

Hannah Furst:
Yeah, so it must not.

Joanna Flemming:
Okay. Hemp-derived, it must be.

Hannah Furst:
Hemp derived. No. Hemp-derived Cannabid-

Joanna Flemming:
So there should be no psychoactive part-

Hannah Furst:
No, no there's not. Well ... Yeah, it's just a really, really nice lip balm, and it is green but it doesn't go on green and it's got this apple-y kind of scent to it. You probably know better than me. CBD. What does it actually do?

Joanna Flemming:
Okay. So from our research, it says that hemp seed oil comes from the seeds of the hemp plant only, while CBD comes from the actual plant. And it does contain a small percentage of THC. So because it's directly from the hemp plant, there isn't actually any of that extra stuff in it. So CBD is probably more like a play on words.

Hannah Furst:
Yeah. So in Australia, all hemp foods, including CBD supplements cannot contain more than the allowed concentration of THC.

Joanna Flemming:
What's the allowed concentration?

Hannah Furst:
Any compound with even a slight THC content above 0.005% is deemed an illicit substance, and not cleared for use. So it must be below that concentration.

Joanna Flemming:
Right. Well, hemp seed oil's still really good for the skin though. There's lots of products that have hemp seed oil in it. It's high in Omega fatty acids, so it's really hydrating. It's anti-inflammatory. So very good for the lips, specifically. You know that Salt by Hendrix Glowtown serum? That's got hemp seed oil in it. The Eco Tan Hempitan, they've got a hemp fake tan, Eco Tan. So there's a few products that it's in, but yeah, it does have quite hydrating properties and rich in fatty acids.

Hannah Furst:
Anyway, it's a really, really nice lip balm. It's really kitschy and cute as well. I just keep it on my desk. How often do I put it on?

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah, you do.

Hannah Furst:
Because I get really dry lips.

Joanna Flemming:
So do I.

Hannah Furst:
It's because I'm super dehydrated. I drink 800 mls of water a day.

Joanna Flemming:
Yeah, I probably barely drink that, to be honest. I'm really bad with water.

Hannah Furst:
I'm so bad with water. I need tips to drink more water.

Joanna Flemming:
I blame my mom because she always gave us cordial as kids.

Hannah Furst:
I even have a SodaStream because I ... Yeah, and I still only have ... Well, I have one bottle of SodaStream a day.

Joanna Flemming:
That's better than nothing.

Hannah Furst:
Yeah, I know, but it's 800 mls of water.

Joanna Flemming:
Let's just do what we can.

Hannah Furst:
Then my lips go completely dry, and then the makeup artist emailed about the wedding, in the lead up, to drink more water. And I just can't. I just don't like it.

Joanna Flemming:
I know, neither. I envy those people that drink three liters a day. How do you do it? Are you a camel?

Hannah Furst:
But I'd have to pee 50 times a day.

Joanna Flemming:
Same. Even if I slightly increase my intake, I'm three times more to the toilet.

Hannah Furst:
And then also all night, if I do it before bed.

Joanna Flemming:
I don't go to the toilet during the night. Ever.

Hannah Furst:
Oh, what? You freak.

Joanna Flemming:
I know. It's really weird. Very, very rarely would I ever get up and go to the toilet. I sleep right through.

Hannah Furst:
I go at least twice every night.

Joanna Flemming:
Oh, that's so annoying.

Hannah Furst:
If not more.

Joanna Flemming:
I'd hate sleeping next to you.

Hannah Furst:
Yeah, well that's why no one ever does sleep next to me. I've got some really weird habits.

Joanna Flemming:
You've got some weird sleep habits.

Hannah Furst:
Yeah. And then when I'm anxious, like if there's someone in the bed next to me, then I-

Joanna Flemming:
You're like, "Get out!"

Hannah Furst:
I can't, I can't. And then I'd have to pee all night. That's another [crosstalk 00:34:11].

Joanna Flemming:
Anyway, therapy session again.

Hannah Furst:
All right, well, we'll see you next week.

Joanna Flemming:
That's it for this episode.
