Can A Microcurrent Device Really Lift Your Face?

Having previously worked with plastic and cosmetic surgeons, cosmetic injectors and dermal clinicians, I'm certainly well-versed in treatment options when it comes to invasive and surgical anti-ageing procedures. I must say, it's good to know there's options. But what if you want to avoid the knife, and you've got no patience for downtime?

Luckily, there are some less hectic options out there too. I'm majorly into skincare devices (you name it, I've tried it) so I was first to use FOREO's new Bear microcurrent device to perform an at-home microcurrent facial - a pilates workout for your face, if you will.

Firstly, What Is A Microcurrent Facial?

Used by a number of well-known celebrity facialists, including Joanna Vargas, this treatment involves using tools which emit a low-voltage electrical current into the skin (which mirror your own body's electrical currents) to promote a more lifted, refined and contoured appearance.

Sounds like total BS, I know, but hear me out. According to Elle, this technology has been approved by the FDA as a muscle stimulator since the 1980s.

"After noticing improved results in patients with atrophied, sagging facial muscles, microcurrent was then adopted as an anti-ageing tool," claims Elle's Kristina Rudolfo.

While skin therapists are likely to use a two-pronged apparatus to complete a microcurrent facial, the devices you can use at home, including FOREO's Bear, look much less scary, and you can control the intensity and function of your treatment via the FOREO app.

The concept involves moving the microcurrent device in an upwards motion across muscle bands in the face and neck to stimulate or "train" the muscles to appear more lifted. Microcurrent facials are often dubbed a non-invasive version of a face lift (and in my opinion, so are tight, slick ponytails).

What You Need To Know About The FOREO Bear:

  • This device uses both microcurrents and T-sonic pulsations to deliver enhanced results

  • This combined technology helps to tone the skin, while promoting circulation & improved product absorption

  • It measures skin’s resistance to electricity & automatically adjusts microcurrent intensity

  • The whole treatment is controlled & can be modified via the FOREO app

  • The device is shaped to easily navigate the contours of the face and neck

  • It feels ultra-gentle on the skin & can be used as part of a complete facial routine

How Do You Use It?

Thankfully, the FOREO app has a guided video that accompanies the routine, so you'll be shown exactly where to place the device, and in what direction to move it in. The standard routine goes for 4 minutes, including the application of the conductive gel.

It's important to note that you must use the provided conductive gel (also known as Serum Serum Serum) in conjuction with the device - you get a little sachet with the device, but there's also a full-size available for pruchase. This helps to create a conductive barrier, effectively and safely transferring microcurrents from the device to your skin.

What Kind Of Results Can You Expect?

Let's be honest, you're not going to look like a before and after on a cosmetic surgeons Instagram page. But with continued use of the FOREO Bear, you can expect to notice an improvement in your skin's brightness, tone and perhaps even identify a "lift" in the skin.

Personally, after using this device a few times over a week, my skin looked plump, revitalised, healthy and glowing. I put that down to the combination of the pulsations and microcurrent technology - but it could also be because I'm house-bound and using a lot more skincare. Time will tell.
