“The eyes are the windows to the soul” - so what happens when your peepers are saying “give us a break, we’re EXHAUSTED”!?

The delicate skin under your eyes is the thinnest skin found on your body, and it also has significantly fewer sebum glands. Thin, dry skin - sounds like a recipe for skin that isn’t as hydrated, resilient, bouncy or fresh as the rest of your complexion. It’s for this reason that a dedicated eye product is what you’ll need - an eye cream, eye serum or eye mask that’s been created with the specific needs of your under eye area in mind.

Looking for an eye care product but not sure where to start? We've made it easy by rounding up our best products in quick lists. Check out our guides on the best eye masks and best eye creams for dark circles.

What is the best eye cream?

Good question - it will depend significantly on what you’re looking to treat! The best eye cream for dark circles looks a lot different from the best anti aging eye cream.

First, think about texture.

Concerned with puffiness or dark circles under the eyes? A thinner formula such as an eye serum will hydrate, cool, soothe and allow puffiness to dissipate and excess blood which can cause darkness under the eye to flow freely away.

Looking for the best eye cream for fine lines? When you’re in the early stages of the ageing process, a retinol eye cream may be too strong - so look for something with a mid-weight texture that contains peptides, ceramides and/or hyaluronic acid. Anything that will help to plump and firm from the inside out.

Those concerned with finding the best anti aging eye cream will want to bring out the big guns. A retinol eye cream will help to retexturise the under eye, smoothing away the appearance of wrinkles, plumping, firming and brightening the eye area all at once. Combine this with peptides, ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid or vitamin C and you have yourself a powerhouse of an anti aging eye cream!

All this sounds great - but how do I apply eye cream?

This will depend a little bit on the individual product, so it’s best to consult the directions on the packaging. As a general rule, most eye creams, especially if they include active ingredients such as retinol, should not be used on the eyelid itself, as it can end up soaking through the skin and into your eyes - most unpleasant!

Instead, take a pine nut sized amount around the eye contour, above and below the eye. The thin under eye skin acts as a sponge, drawing moisture up and towards the inner under eye area, where it's needed.

Applying your eye cream up to your lash line runs the risk of the product migrating into your eyes - and this can hurt! Stick to your eye contour and you’ll be perking up those peepers in no time.

Not sure

I’m not sure about this stuff. It def ‘works’ in that the under eye area looks about 10 years younger straight away. But I cannot find a way to wear it where it looks good. Leaves white cast even if applied incredibly sparingly. Mixed with concealer it sits strangely on the skin. I want to like it. Lol

Not great

I did not find that this serum helped my crows feet. I prefer to use an eye cream.
