Prickly pear ringing a bell? That's because this beautiful hair serum is the latest addition to Christophe Robin’s Prickly Pear Regenerating Range, which was created especially for dry, damaged hair that really needs a huge hydration hug.

The serum is an all-in-one treatment product, meaning it’s been designed to perform the roles of three hair products at the same time - heat protectant, frizz-fighter and split ends treatment.

You apply it onto wet hair after washing, the same way you might a leave-in conditioner or a heat protectant spray. It adds extra nourishment, preventing frizz and split ends, while offering your hair protection from any heat styling tools you might use. 

Like all of the other products in the range, the serum’s hero ingredient is prickly pear oil.

This oil is packed full of omegas, fatty acids and amino acids - three ingredients that help restore the hair and make it stronger. The serum also contains tucumba butter, which gives hair a huge hydration boost and is a plant-based alternative to silicone. 

If you’ve got dry, damaged or colour-treated hair, it’s best to stay away from products that contain silicones. That’s because silicones are artificial sealants that close off the hair shaft to water and air, meaning nothing can penetrate it properly, including your nice hair care products and salon colour.

While silicones can give the hair that slippery silky feeling, it actually isn’t real - it’s all artificial. Over time, because the hair is “locked off” and can’t receive any nutrients, it can become dry and brittle through lack of moisture, which leads to breakage and frizz. 

That’s why it’s really important to use hair care products that don’t contain silicone, especially if you already have dry or dehydrated hair. 

I was super excited to try this serum because I’m a huge Christophe Robin fan, plus I’m definitely the target market as my hair is coloured, very dry and frizz-prone. 

While I always use a nourishing hair mask every time I wash my hair, I also need a hydrating hair serum afterwards to ensure my locks stay silky and smooth. So I was curious to see how this product would stack up against my other favourites like the VIRTUE Split End Serum 50ml and Kerastase Elixir Ultime hair oil 75ml

The brand says this product can be applied on both wet and dry hair - I enjoyed it most pressed into wet hair after showering. And that’s all because of its texture. It has a consistency similar to a creamy moisturiser, rather than a lightweight hair oil or gel-like serum.

A quick note about the scent: I honestly expected this product to smell like pears (you know, because of the prickly pear oil?), but it doesn’t. It just smells like a regular old fancy hair product. Yum.

During my first road test, I let my hair air-dry naturally after application and it felt super soft, strong and hydrated. Then I straightened my hair and found the tool easily glided over my strands because they were silky smooth.

The end result was super sleek and I felt like my hair was definitely protected from the damaging heat tool. 

The second time I used the serum was a few days later, once my hair had become quite dirty and was tied back into a messy pony. I slathered it on to protect my colour before jumping into the ocean one morning, then again as I dried off and also later that afternoon while I scraped my hair back into a sleek bun and headed out for drinks.

After I finally got around to washing the salt water out, I found my hair felt way healthier than it normally does after a dip in the ocean. This is definitely something I’m going to be doing all summer long to protect my hair during those summer swim sessions!

From a cost-per-use perspective, I love that with this, you only need to think about applying one hair product after jumping out of the shower instead of a bunch of different treatments. 

A little pump of this precious serum also goes a long way - win! And it's just a lovely, luxurious treat.

Considering all the trauma we put our hair through, she's worth it.
