This autumn we’re launching SPF365 to spread the message that SPF is always in season. To promote wearing sunscreen 365 days a year, we’re partnering with Skin Smart and taking SPF365 on the road to offer free skin checks and free AB Lab SPF’s. We’re also bringing along a UV-camera so you can see how SPF coverage works in real-time.

We’ll begin our skin-caring journey in NSW. From May 29th to June 2nd we’ll be travelling to Bondi Beach, Terrigal Beach, Newcastle Beach & Coffs Harbour.

Introducing Skin Smart Australia

We’re proud to be partnering with Skin Smart to offer free skin checks as part of our SPF365 activation. Skin Smart is the country’s leading national provider of onsite and mobile workplace skin checks. With two in three Australians diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70, Skin Smart aims to shine the light on the importance of prevention & early detection; PREVENT – CHECK – DETECT. 

With expertise in skin cancer detection and education, Skin Smart is made up of medical and dermal practitioners that perform onsite screening services. In addition to their respective degree qualifications, Skin Smart Australia’s dermoscopists hold post graduate qualifications in dermatoscopy, which makes them some of the best skin cancer detection professionals in the country.

Why sunscreen is our only non-negotiable beauty rule

Australia has one of the highest levels of UV exposure and highest rates of skin cancer in the world. According to Cancer Council, about two in three Australians diagnosed with some form of skin cancer before the age of 70. And according to Sun Smart, the main cause of skin cancer is the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Too much UV exposure also causes sunburn, tanning, premature ageing and eye damage. 

The World Health Organization's Global Solar UV Index measures UV levels on a scale from 0 (Low) to 11+ (Extreme). In Australia, the annual average UV index ranges from moderate to extreme depending location. Even in winter, the vast majority of the country experiences an average UV index of 3 and above.

So what does this mean? That in Australia, wearing a high-coverage SPF 365 days of the year isn’t just a good idea. It’s a non-negotiable. 

For 23 years, Adore Beauty’s co-founder Kate Morris has stood behind SPF as her one and only beauty rule. It was only fitting that when we launched our first own brand, AB LAB, in 2022, we did so with a range of skincare-led facial sunscreens. Not your average sunscreen, each AB LAB SPF product has been formulated to cater to different skin concerns and needs. After all, if you’re not wearing a high-coverage SPF 365 days of the year, you might as well throw your expensive serums, moisturisers and masks down the sink! 

On days with a UV level of 3 and above, Cancer Council recommends that sunscreen should be incorporated into your daily routine. According to SunSmart, in lab conditions SPF50 filters 98% of UVB and can provide excellent protection if applied properly. The recommended amount of SPF is 5mL (approximately one teaspoon) for each arm, leg, body front, body back and face (including neck and ears).

Finding the right sunscreen for you

Finding a sunscreen that you love wearing every day is the first step in making sure you’re applying an SPF 365 days of the year. 

While developing AB LAB, Adore Beauty surveyed more than 800 Adore Society members to understand how they make choices about the products they use. The survey revealed that Australians’ sunscreen habits are not up to scratch, one in three respondents saying they don’t wear a facial sunscreen every day, despite the known risks of UV damage to the skin.

80% said they would use an SPF daily if it included a cosmeceutical that helped to improve the condition of their skin. The survey also revealed that a majority of respondents choose SPFs with their skin type in mind, with more than half saying they are very likely to use a product that suits their skin over a ‘general’ SPF. Good skin hydration is the most desirable effect of an active SPF after protection.

Wearing sunscreen is an important part of protecting yourself from sun damage but it should be a part of your overall sun protection strategy that includes wearing appropriate clothing, avoiding sun exposure – especially when the UV index is highest, seeking share and wearing a hat. Always read the label and follow directions for use. Apply 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every 2 hours.
