The Ordinary Retinol Collection for Ageing Skin

Retinol has gained celebrity status in the skincare world over the past few years, with many people now considering it a staple in their routine. Retinol is especially popular as an anti-ageing ingredient, as it encourages collagen production and skin cell rejuvenation. The Ordinary Retinol Collection offers retinol in different levels of concentration, including newbies who need to start off gently and seasoned retinol users wanting to amp up their dosage.

Our Recommend The Ordinary Retinol Skincare Routine

Learning the incredible benefits of retinol might make you want to lather up ASAP, but it’s important to understand how to incorporate it properly. This high potency ingredient can cause irritation and sun sensitivity on all complexions if used incorrectly, but if you proceed with patience and care this can be avoided! First of all, The Ordinary Retinol should only be used in the evening as it increases the likelihood of sun damage. Retinol can be applied to dry skin after using a hydrating cleanser like The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser. Retinol can be drying, so it’s important to follow up with a hydrating serum or moisturiser such as The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid, The Ordinary Natural Moisturising Factors + HA, or a natural facial oil. It’s important to avoid exfoliating the skin before using retinol, as it leaves skin too vulnerable. Retinol should never be used alongside other active ingredients, as it may react badly and damage the skin. It’s also a great idea to incorporate SPF into your daily skincare routine if you haven’t already.

What is Retinol, and how does it work?

Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A that is formulated to be applied topically on the skin. Retinol encourages cell turnover, which happens naturally in the body but becomes less frequent as we age, leading to fine lines and wrinkles, so retinol fights those signs of ageing as it occurs. Skin cell build up also leads to blocked pores, congestion, acne, and blackheads, and retinol helps to cleanse the skin of those dead cells. Because your skin is constantly being refreshed, retinol can also help reduce the appearance of pigmentation such as dark spots and acne scars and improve overall skin tone.

What is the difference between Vitamin A and Retinol?

Retinol is a form of Vitamin A that naturally occurs in the skin, whilst Vitamin A is naturally present in many foods. For Vitamin A to be absorbed into the skin, it must first be broken down into retinol.

Can I use The Ordinary lactic acid with retinol?

The Ordinary Lactic Acid is another great addition to your skincare routine, but it is also potent and is best to be used on alternate days to retinol.

Can I use niacinamide with The Ordinary retinol?

Yep! Niacinamide hydrates the skin and reduces irritation, so it’s great to pair with retinol for faster healing and safer use.

Can I use The Ordinary retinol around the eyes?

The Ordinary Retinol can be applied around the eyes, and is a great way to treat crow's feet! The skin around the eye is delicate and sensitive, so it’s best to apply a small amount of retinol mixed with moisturiser or eye cream.

Is Retinol from The Ordinary good for acne?

Retinol is great for acne as it helps to cleanse the skin of dead cells that lead to congestion and acne. Basically, it cleans the skin from the inside out.

Is Retinol from The Ordinary good for scars and pigmentation?

Retinol is great for scars and pigmentation, as it encourages cell turnover and reveals fresh, clean skin. Scars naturally fade over time, and retinol simply speeds up this process.

Is Retinol from The Ordinary good for rosacea?

Retinol-based products are not recommended for those who suffer from rosacea, as this ingredient can cause further irritation and encourage flare-ups. Instead, reach for calmer active ingredients that help to reduce inflammation.

Is Retinol from The Ordinary comedogenic?

Retinol is non-comedogenic, so it will not cause skin congestion.

Is Retinol from The Ordinary good for wrinkles?

Retinol is one of the most effective topical anti-ageing solutions for both preventing ageing and reversing existing signs of ageing such as wrinkles, fine lines, loss of elasticity and more.

Is Retinol from The Ordinary good for dark spots?

Retinol encourages skin cell turnover and, therefore, helps to even out and brighten any dark spots on the skin.

How often to use The Ordinary retinol

If you’ve never used retinol before, it’s best to start slow and work your way up. One to two times per week is a safe place to start, and once your skin adapts it can be used more frequently. It’s also a good idea to start with a lower concentrare such as The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane.

When to use The Ordinary retinol

Always use retinol in the evening, as it makes your skin more sensitive to sun damage.

Fantastic Price for a great product

This works very well on my skin. I am in my late 40s and live in the northern part of Aus, and this doesn't clog my pores or feel too heavy. With the cost of everything rising I use this because I am on a strict budget like everybody else is and the price for this and the results I am getting are fantastic. I also love that its cruely free.
