Looking For a Cool, Fresh New Scent? Meet Commodity.

Book, Moss, Milk, Paper - these are the names of the crisp, clean and unique alchemy of scents by Commodity - the new niche and cool perfume brand you’re about to fall in love with.

Although, it’s actually not new. A moment back in time…

Years ago, I took a trip to the US to visit family and bought this kinda cool, kinda underground discovery set of monochrome vials with names like ‘Gold’ and ‘Velvet’.

I loved each and every unique scent in the discovery set. Which is rare, there’s always a discovery set outlier. But not in this offering.

Each scent blanketed my skin and clothes with an indescribable but captivating smell unlike anything I’d ever really come across.

A lot of them had a very ‘clean’ note (most likely Iso E Super) that made me think: “This is what I imagine a '90s Calvin Klein model wearing.”

When I finished my vials, I vigorously searched online to find the set again and repurchase, but to no avail.

So I did what any desperate scent girlie would do - WhatsApped my American cousins and told them they needed to send me some across the Atlantic Ocean.

Sadly, still, no luck. These cool, clean scents had done a complete houdini.

What happened to Commodity?

I accepted the sad reality - they were just here for a good time not a long time.

Then on New Year's Eve of this year, my cousin’s wife said to me, “Sadaf, I have to show you these cool new scents I got. They smell so good! My fave is ‘Milk’."

WOT.

They. Were. BACK. It was like seeing a ghost, an old friend.

“I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR THESE FOR THE LAST TEN YEARS!”

Universe, if you're reading this, thank you for bringing Commodity back into my life (while I have your attention, I lost my lapis stone ring in Greece ten years ago too, can you also bring that back or am I asking too much?).

Anyways, if you love non-traditional scents that are captivating, earthy and clean then you will LOVE Commodity.

An olafactory of unique notes that ensures you won't be smelling like everyone else.

What Is Commodity?

Each distinct and unique Commodity scent offering comes in three iterations: Personal, Expressive, and Bold.

What does that mean?

We’ll let the brand do the talking… "With Scent Space you can pick whether your fragrance discretely stays close to your skin, fills the room for a statement, or falls somewhere in between."

Personal:

'The Personal Collection is for those who prefer a subtle, intimate fragrance – to be noticed only by you and the few you allow close.

Soft, ethereal and luxurious, these molecular compositions have a trace of their 'Expressive' counterpart and embody the concept of less is more.'

Expressive:

'The Expressive collection is considered by many to be the perfect balance of longevity and projection.

These fragrances will make a statement without overpowering any space – to be noticed by you and the many around you.'

Bold:

'There is no modesty when it comes to the Bold collection.

Infused with exotic notes, these are amplified renditions of their 'Expressive' counterpart.

Designed for those intent on making their presence known, they are for you and everyone else.'

When I had originally owned the Commodity discovery set ten years ago, I actually wore 'Gold' Personal and 'Velvet' Bold the most.

Now as I've gotten older, my taste has moved into woody, smoky and leather territory and for this reason my top pick is Book Bold and Moss Personal.

My mini Commodity Book review:

What: Commodity Book+ Bold 100ml

Notes:

First: Eucalyptus, Violet.

Then: Cedarwood, Sanadlwood.

Finally: Velvet, Musk, Smoke.

If you love who is elijah Morning After, Lumira Cuban Tobacco or Aesop Eidesis (yes, these are all my current fave scents with both feminine and masculine appeal) - you will love this.

Think of that same scent family, but slightly more delictate. More earthy with a hint of spice.

If we want to play a little word association game, here's what comes to mind: Library, cool girl scent, clean, wear everyday, captivating but not too much on the nose.

My mini Moss-Personal review:

What: Commodity Moss- Personal 100ml

Notes:

First: Bergamot.

Then: Petitgrain, Oakmoss.

Base: Amber, Skin Musk.

My second top pick is Moss Personal (or visually, the white bottle).

Will wash you over with a stunning earthy, mossy smell that is guaranteed to have people stop you on the street.

This is how the brand poetically describes it:

"Moss' green and citrus aroma of Bergamot, Oakmoss and Petitgrain is made weightless with a molecular cloud of Musk. Vibrant and refreshing like a breath of fresh air.

This fragrance's crisp aroma is one that nature would be proud of. Fresh, green and earthy, its reminiscent of a walk in the woods at dawn—wet, cool, clean and reviving."

Sounds weird to describe a scent this way, but it smells kind of “thrilling” like you just had a rumble with a sexy man in the woods.

So if like me your scent palette favours sexy, earthy, slightly spicy and woody scents you will love both of these (and Paper, and Velvet, and... I told you they're all gewd).

What: Commodity Paper+ Bold 100ml

"When Sadaf let slip she was writing about Commodity I basically jumped across my desk to vouch for Paper.

It's a woody, warm, skin-scent that has a touch of soap (minus the powdery notes that often accompany clean soap-scented perfumes).

It's a recent addition to my scent collection and I love the way it blends with my skin, I'm not sure if it's because I've picked up the bold version, or because it's a fragrance that evolves throughout the day, but the scent really lingers, I still get surprise wafts of warm, sweet forest hours after I've put it on. I'm obsessed!"

What:

Commodity Moss- Personal 100ml

Commodity Milk Expressive 100ml

"When Commodity arrived in the office - best believe I sniffed every single one of the fragrances to immerse myself in this intriguing three version scent collection.

While all of them are divine - two were solid stand outs for me.

As a lover of gourmand and vanilla fragrances - Milk Expressive love at first spritz!

The opening notes of Cold Milk and Skin Musk are instantly captivating and whimsical.

When the fragrance settles on the skin the marshmallow really comes through as the hero note.

This is for sure a new scent on rotation for me when I want something sweet, creamy and captivating to finish off my outfit for the day.

My second hero (and maybe my frontrunner for overall favourite) is Moss Personal.

Although I have been a long time lover of softer 'skin scents' I have recently been loving adding some fresh and green fragrances to my rotation - so naturally Moss Personal was an instant classic when I picked it up for the first time.

The clean notes of Bergamot, Oakmoss and Skin Musk definitely reminded me of walking through a damp forest in dappled lighting- and the subtlety of the 'personal' concentration also make this variation feel calm and intimate.

If you want to smell clean, fresh and maybe a little sexy - Moss Personal is my unisex pick for you."

What:

Commodity Book Expressive 100ml

Commodity Paper- Personal 100ml

"I have to confess, this is not my first rodeo when it comes to Commodity!

The brand used to be available in Australia a few years ago but left the market to focus on home turf - so when I heard they were thinking about returning to Australia, I HAD to make sure Adore Beauty was their first stop!

Back in the day, Book Expressive was my go-to and I still LOVE it -It's inspired by the New York Public Library and is a light wood with notes of Sandalwood and Cedarwood but my favourite part - a stunning Bergamot top note which gives it a sparkling spritz of floral citrus that keeps this so airy and light - just like cracking open a book on a cool Autumn morning!

My newest favourite though is Paper- Personal.

This smells really light when sprayed into the air but completely transforms as soon as it hits your skin.

That's thanks to its top note of Iso E Super which is one of those synthetic notes which adapts to your own personal skin chemistry for a "my skin but better" scent that's unique to you - on me it's clean, a little woody and a little powdery.

Just when I thought it couldn't get better - I caught a whiff of myself a few hours later and realised that the Amber base note was coming through as this sultry, subtle warmth and sweet muskiness that was completely intoxicating - like crawling into a warm, clean bed in some High Country cabin.

Experiment with layering this under or over your other scents too if you want to create a personalised take on an old favourite - it's the perfect base to any fragrance wardrobe."
