Here is Exactly What Your Fave Cult Fragrance Says About You

I’m not going to say I’m a psychic, but I'm pretty confident I know one thing about you, even though I've never met you.

Or smelled you, to be more precise. Let me explain.

You see, I bet you probably have or had one of the following top women’s perfumes at some point in your lifetime:

  • Calvin Klein CK One EDT Spray 100 mL

  • Marc Jacobs Daisy EDT 100ml

  • Chloé Signature EDP 50 mL

  • Burberry My Burberry EDP 50 mL

Was I right or was I right? (I was wrong? What! Impossible. This is a science!)

I’ll admit, the odds were in my favour given we're talking about some of the most popular perfumes of the last 30 years or so.

FYI, Hannah and Jo asked a fragrance taxonomist how to find your perfect perfume on the Beauty IQ Uncensored podcast, get it in your ears below!

Hosting Beauty Island, a podcast that talks to guests about their beauty memories and the significant products enjoyed along their journey, it always fascinates me to see the trends of the products many of us have shared. And often, it's age and era-defining perfumes that stick out to us.

But fragrance isn't all serious and sentimental. It’s fun, too. Because you can tell a lot about a person based on the perfume they wear. Or wore. Particularly, if like me, you enjoy matching your perfume to your personality.

So whether you’re looking to reminisce over an old favourite, discover a new one, or just haven’t done a Buzzfeed quiz telling you who you are in a while, here’s what your go-to of these four cult fragrances says about you.

1. Calvin Klein CK One.

What it is:

Calvin Klein CK One EDT Spray 100 mL is a radiant citrus perfume with soapy, fresh top notes of green tea, bergamot and cardamom, a heart of violet, rose and nutmeg, and a base of amber and musk. CK One is unisex with universal appeal.

Why it’s so iconic:

CK One was launched with campaign imagery that helped secure its iconic position; a young Kate Moss with a group of effortless, ‘don’t care’ models shot by legendary photographer, Steven Meisel. Très 90s, no?

According to British beauty expert Sali Hughes in her book Pretty Iconic, CK One wasn’t the first unisex fragrance, but it was the first to boldly use that key distinction to help build its success. At its highest point, it was selling a reported 20 bottles a minute. That’s one every three seconds!

What it says about you:

Spring is your favourite season. You love ‘undone glamour’ rather than ‘polished prep’ (read: you rarely brush your hair). You pride yourself on your carefully curated and ultra cool Spotify playlists. Your go-to uniform is well-worn jeans and a crisp white t-shirt or singlet. You’re living for the '90s resurgence, and yes, you still love Kate Moss.

2. Marc Jacobs Daisy.

What it is:

Marc Jacobs Daisy EDT 100ml is a fruity floral fragrance. It's fresh and feminine, bursting with violet leaf and wild berries before opening to a velvety heart of jasmine and violet petals. The drydown cements the romance with sensual sandalwood, vanilla and musk.

Why it’s so iconic:

One of the first ‘grown up’ scents I remember owning, there have been many iterations of Daisy since it was first created in 2007, but there’s something special about the original. Still a favourite among teens (and the rest of us adults young at heart), it’s considered a great ‘entry level’ fragrance to the world of designer perfume.

Interestingly, it’s named after the designer’s favourite literary character - Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby. Innocent and fresh, simple and extravagant, it’s embedded with subtle contradictions that make it a beloved and sentimental scent that still endures today. I mean, those Takashi Murakami daisies on the cap!!

What it says about you:

Summer is your favourite season. You love to frolic through fields - real or imagined. You feel forever 22 at heart, and yes, you have (or are actively searching for) the perfect white prairie summer dress. You also look good in a straw boater hat - no mean feat.

3. Chloe Signature EDP.

What it is:

Chloé Signature EDP 50 mL is a floral fragrance with top notes of lychee, peony and freesia, heart notes of Damask rose, magnolia and lily of the valley, and base notes of honey, amber and cedarwood.

Why it’s so iconic:

If you spotted this on someone’s dresser, you knew they were chic with a capital C. Feminine and sophisticated, but not in an all-out-girly way, we've all wanted a Chloe fragrance at some point.

Created in 2008 by perfumers Amandine Clerc-Marie (who interestingly is the nose behind a Daisy variation - Kiss) and Michel Almairac, it was designed to be versatile enough to wear every day. Chloe is elegant and daring, which is basically the definition of a signature scent.

What it says about you:

Every season is your season. Chic is your middle name. You love a good designer bag. You use a bookmark rather than folding down the corners of a book. Your signature drink order is a sophisticated cocktail the rest of us just pretend to like. You’re an excellent flirt.

4. Burberry My Burberry.

What it is:

Burberry My Burberry EDP 50 mL is what the brand calls a ‘contemporary British grand flora’. It's inspired by Burberry’s iconic trench, conjuring up the surrounds of a London garden after a shower of rain. Top notes of sweet pea and bergamot, a heart of geranium leaf, quince and freesia, and a base of patchouli, damask and centifolia roses dance for a lush and lively scent.

Why it’s so iconic:

A perfume inspired by a coat might not necessarily suggest romantic thoughts (or a nice smell, to be honest) but when it’s Burberry… things are a little different.

A comparative newbie having launched in 2014, this scent is described as a floral bouquet with a modern twist and a pepper accent. It’s also the second perfume on this list to have featured Kate Moss in its launch campaign.

What it says about you:

You pick up accents around you easily. You love British comedy. You have a collection of fancy bath oils that form the basis of your self-care routine. If you don’t have a carefully-pruned garden, then you have a home steadily filling with indoor plant children.

And if you haven't had the pleasure of owning one of these cult fragrances... why the heck not?
