My Verdict on the New ‘Baobab Oil’ Repair Products That Promise Ridiculously Soft Hair

Raise your hand if you haven't had a haircut in months... same.

Don't know about you, but my hair isn’t looking or feeling too flash right now. It's limp and dry and more dull than usual.

Thanks, lockdown.

I want healthy, shiny, swishy hair back and I want it now.

Until the glorious day when we can go to the hairdressers again, using hair repair products at home is the next best thing.

Enter, R+Co’s new On A Cloud Baobab Oil Repair range.

I know what you're thinking. This trio of products is very good looking.

But honestly, pop the word 'repair' on any bottle of hair product and you'll pique my interest.

If you use heat styling tools, blow dry your hair, colour it or just walk outside and expose it to the sun or cold air like I do, you're probably also drawn to products that claim to revive dry, damaged hair.

The catch? A lot of hair repair products are too heavy, leave hair greasy or weigh hair down. But not these ones.

After a few weeks of road-testing them myself, keep scrolling for my review.

What Is Baobab Oil & What Does It Do for Hair?

What makes this range special is each product is formulated with a star ingredient – baobab oil.

Baobab oil comes from the fruit that grows on the Baobab tree (mostly grown in Africa), also known as “the tree of life” because of its many benefits.

Usually cold-pressed, baobab oil can be found in both skin care and hair care. Benefits and qualities include:

• Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, making it a great moisturising ingredient (this is very important for repairing dry or damaged hair).

• Rich in proteins to help strengthen weakened or damaged hair.

• Vitamin E and antioxidants heal hair cuticles, and nourish dry scalps and hair.

• The gentle ingredient is suitable for those with sensitive scalps.

Back to the products in question that lured me in with sweet hair repair nothings.

The plant protein targets loss of shine, hair breakage and limp strands by repairing damaged bonds within the hair. And baobab oil, vitamin E and vitamin C deeply nourish and moisturise.

Gentle but effective. Stunning packaging. Able to restore dry, damaged hair. Leaves hair feeling as soft and light as a fluffy cloud. Plus, they're cruelty-free, vegan and colour-safe.

Almost sounds too good to be true...

I can happily report after trialling all three products together in my haircare routine over the last few weeks, my formerly straw-like hair is back to its soft, shiny self.

What:

R+Co ON A CLOUD Baobab Repair Shampoo - 251ml

A luxe, sulphate-free, oil-protein shampoo that gently cleanses while rebonding the inner structure of the hair. Fancy and hardworking!

Ingredients:

Essential oils in the formula offer moisture while other star ingredient maca extract strengthens and nourishes hair follicles.

Best for:

Those with bleached, permed, thick or dry hair. Also great for anyone with curls who tend to have dryer hair.

My R+Co Baobab Oil Repair Shampoo review:

Because it’s sulphate-free, this shampoo doesn’t really lather up so you might think, “is this really doing anything?”

But as soon as I hopped out of the shower and gave my hair a quick dry, I could see and feel how clean it was.

It delivered fluffier, much softer and bouncier hair. It legit looked like it had been brought back to life.

This shampoo basically resuscitated my hair.

Usually, even after using a conditioner, there’s a chunk of my hair towards the back that always looks frizzy and feels like straw. After using this shampoo – poof! Gone.

What:

R+Co ON A CLOUD Baobab Repair Masque - 147ml

A nourishing, protein-rich hair mask that hydrates, adds shine, repairs bonds and adds elasticity.

Ingredients:

Baobab oil-protein, vitamin E and vitamin C repair and protect hair from damage, while shea butter, sweet almond oil and maca extract deliver deep hydration.

Best for:

Anyone (myself included) who overdoes it with heat styling tools, has dry, damaged and/or coarse hair, or just wants super soft hair.

My R+Co Baobab Oil Repair Masque review:

The brand recommends towel-drying hair well before applying as water dilutes the product...

I applied it while I was still in the shower (after shampooing), turned off the water, did other shower stuff for five mins before rinsing out.

It has a creamy texture but doesn’t feel greasy, sticky or heavy as you slather it on.

Smells lovely and I was left with softer, sleeker hair that lasted until my next wash and it didn’t weigh my hair down!

Those who want a deeper treatment can leave the mask on for a little longer. It was the perfect cure for my rough strands. A big yes from me!

What:

R+Co ON A CLOUD Baobab Repair Splash-On Styler

A leave-in treatment that's also a styling product for instantly softer, shiner hair.

Ingredients:

This finishing product is formulated with the same oil-protein technology as the shampoo and masque, but with a cuticle-sealing complex of grapeseed, green tea and vitamin B5 to smooth and reduce frizz.

Best for:

If you want a repairing, detangling and styling product in one.

My R+Co Baobab Oil Repair Splash On Styler Review:

Any product that says it will help smooth out my frizz is an instant yes from me. I was hooked from the first time I smoothed it onto my ends.

This treatment can be used on both damp hair before styling, and on dry, styled hair to get rid of frizz and add shine.

Pro tip: Make sure you spritz the product onto your hands before running through the hair so you don’t look like a greaseball.

The product has a slightly creamier texture, so be careful when you pump it out.

Hold it a few centimetres back from your clothes, because it kind of shoots out like a lotion rather than dispersing as a mist.

As someone who loves scent, the way the fragrance lingers when you swish your hair around is delightful.

The brand calls it a 'spirited unpredictable scent’. In other words: Bergamot, wild fig, lotus flower and cedarwood.

My favourite way to use the baobab treatment is on dry hair. The tiniest amount adds instant gloss, and does indeed leave hair feeling as soft as a cloud.

I already know this is going to be an everyday product in my routine, especially come summer to protect and revive hair after salty swims.

Final verdict? I can't stop touching my hair now. It's a winner.
