M.A.C Foundation Shades Explained
On first glance, M.A.C foundation shades can be a little confusing. In fact, they can still be confusing after the second glance! The brand uses a unique numbering and lettering system, one which works differently to that of other makeup brands.
First, the letters refer to a particular undertone: warm or cool. The trick with M.A.C, though, is that you DON’T want to pick a makeup that matches your undertone. You want to pick the opposite undertone to balance your complexion!
So, if you have a warm complexion with yellow and olive hues, you want to look at ‘C’ shades. And if you have a cool complexion with pink and rosy hues, look for ‘W’ shades. The ‘N’ stands for neutral, which tones down the amount of warmth or coolness in the foundation. That means an ‘NC’ shade is less pink than a ‘C’ shade is.
Second, the numbers refer to the lightness or darkness of your skin. The higher the number, the darker the shade.
