The days are warming up and that means it's spritz season.

And no, I'm not talking about Aperol, I'm talking face mists. I've been trawling through the Adore Beauty supply closet to narrow down a list of the best face mists for summer.

Along with sunny picnics, lazy beach days and long, warm summer nights - SPF obligatory, of course - now is the ideal time to add a refreshing face mist to your beauty arsenal.

Pfft, aren't face mists just fancy scented water, you ask?

Sure, some are, but some are mist-multitools that:

  • Revive crusty makeup

  • Smooth serum application and penetration

  • Freshen up your skin for that dewy summer glow

  • Hydrate your skin while leaving your makeup intact

  • Add a burst of refreshment to your day (especially, if you keep yours in the fridge)

What is a Face Mist?

If you're thinking face mists are a bit of a marketing ploy, I hear you and I used to feel the same. However, like many skincare categories, face mists have upped their game in the last couple of years.

Many face mists have elevated their formulas to include hydrating or skincare-boosting ingredients. Meaning they are an easy way to give your 3pm-skin a zhoosh or to prep or set your makeup (more on that later).

Plus, chucking one in your bag is a total game changer for summer. You'll be looking fresh-faced and smiling smugly to yourself as everyone sweats through the heat (warning: the face mist non-believers will be asking to borrow a spray).

And yes, this experience can be majorly elevated if past you remembers to keep yours in the fridge.

What's the difference between a face mist and a setting spray?

A face mist is a skincare product that's main goal is to hydrate and refresh the skin, while a setting spray is a makeup product that is designed to lock the makeup in place. While a face mist can change the finish of your makeup application it won't set it like a setting spray will. However, the skincare scientists have been working hard and now you can even find hydrating face mist/setting spray hybrids that can do it all.

Which is the Best Face Mist?

Face mists won't radically change or transform your skin. But if you can afford one, they’re a nice-to-have that can offer worthy benefits and boost other products in your routine. (Psst if you're still wondering what products should be in your rotation, have a look at our skincare routine guide). There's not a single absolute best face mist (you've heard before – everyone's needs are different) but to help you narrow it down, I've filtered my favourite face mists by concern so you can breeze into summer, spritz at the ready.

1. The Best Glowy Makeup Setting Spray - M.A.C. Cosmetics Prep + Prime Fix+

With an assortment of skin-loving ingredients, this skin-loving Mac setting spray will take your look to the next level. A cult classic, M.A.C Cosmetics Prep + Prime Fix+ is a versatile hydration spray that sets makeup for enhanced wear. Perfect for refreshing your look as the day wears on, the lightweight formula contains a blend of vitamins and minerals to revive the skin’s complexion.

Why it's so good:

This version of the iconic MAC Fix+ is a spectacular face mist and dewy-finish setting spray with added skin prep and priming power.

The formula is infused with minerals, vitamins and hydrating ingredients to boost your skin's moisture levels and some versions even include a very subtle shimmer for when you need a glowy face mist to help you whip out that lit-from-within ethereal luminosity.

It ensures your carefully made-up face will last the day. For added staying power, dampen your beauty blender with it instead of water and apply your foundation as normal. It's my go to product for transforming cakey-makeup to a more natural and dewy finish. If you want more advice on how to achieve that coveted glow, check out this makeup artist's advice on how to get glowy, dewy skin.

I'm going to level with you, there is one thing I dislike – the spray comes out as more of an intense shower than a fine mist. However, the formula is SO good that I've repurchased anyway and will continue to brave the spattering as long as it keeps giving my skin that carefully crafted look of freshness.

Hot tip: If you're wanted more intensity out of your highlighter, pigments, or eyeshadow you can spray a tiny bit of Prep + Prime Fix+ onto your brushes before application.

2. Best Hydrating Face Mist - Laneige Cream Skin Mist

Laneige Cream Skin Mist 75ml
Laneige Cream Skin Mist 75ml

A refreshing toning spray that delivers long lasting hydration. The mist delivers moisture for up to 12 hours while also strengthening the skin barrier. You can use this mist before your skincare, or after you apply your makeup as a hydrating setting spray (bring on that dewy glow).

Why it's so good:

It's a hydrating face mist/toning spray that's enriched with amino acids and other goodies to keep your skin refreshed and hydrated. I use it during times when my skin is feeling a tad tight and dry and I'm in need of a hydration top-up throughout the day. I've also heard it works very well if you're trying to amp up the moisture content in your skincare routine. If that sounds like you, take a sneak peak at some of our fave 2024 products for dry and flaky skin.

In my experience, it sits really well both under and over makeup. It's advertised to deliver moisture for 12 hours all the while treating your skin to everything else in it's antioxidant-packed ingredients list. The result? A juicy just-hydrated complexion.

3. Best Balancing Face Mist - Aesthetics Rx Microbiome Balancing Mist

Aesthetics RxMicrobiome Balancing Mist is a nutrient-rich treatment formula designed to be used anytime, anywhere to instantly help calm, refresh, moisturise and reduce skin discomfort. It’s also naturally scented with essential oils of Grapefruit, Rosemary, Fennel, Rose Geranium and Spearmint for a heavenly sensory experience.

Why it's so good:

This refreshing face mist is amazing if you find your skin getting a little oily throughout the day. It's a good addition to skincare routines made for acne and oil prone and skin. Its purpose is to rebalance oil flow while supporting the skin's microbiome to keep it healthy and hydrated.

As you can see by this list, I'm partial to face mists infused with skincare ingredients and this one is no different–it's a seriously antioxidant-heavy face mist. It's got a long list of skin-loving add ins (including niacinamide and panthenol) that are there to calm, hydrate, reduce skin discomfort, and support the skin barrier.

This face mist is a bit more on the mattifying side, so I usually use it when my skin is feeling a bit oilier. I apply it after cleansing and before makeup, or just throughout the day over the top of makeup. The spray is also the perfect size and you can get good face coverage in around 2 spritzes. Win.

4. Best Refreshing Face Mist - Ella Baché Rose Hydration Mist

Sweet, refreshing, hydrating, and protecting, the Ella Baché Rose Hydration Mist is here to refresh your day and refresh your face. A few spritz of this throughout the day will keep you hydrated and comfortable, while helping to improve your skin’s barrier protection.

Why it's so good:

Surprise! It's another antioxidant face mist. This rendition is packed with botanicals and hyaluronic acid for when you need a dewy-glow inducing face mist but without the shimmer. Basically, after a few invigorating spritzes it gives your skin a plumped-glow. Plus, it helps balance the skin's pH levels and overtime can aid in strengthening the skin barrier. It can be used as a post cleansing toner, or just applied throughout the day to refresh your makeup or bare (BUT SUNSCREENED) face.

It also has a floral but still fresh scent – It's light and not to chemically and isn't overpoweringly rose-watery (I assure you, no powdery rose fragrance).

Overall, a good refreshing face mist for summer that still has a few of those skincare benefits packed in.

5. Best Calming Face Mist - Dermalogica UltraCalming Mist

Make it a Mist

Dermalogica UltraCalming Mist is ideal for sensitive skin. Designed to suit those who suffer from redness and irritation, this caring mist calms any inflammation on the skin and keeps you feeling fresh. This travel-sized formula is perfect if you want to tone your skin throughout the day. Perfect for use on the go, only a few spritzes are needed to relieve redness and calm the skin down when it gets uncomfortable. This PETA-accredited mist helps restore the skin’s natural moisture barrier while infusing it with light hydration.

Make it a Mist

Why it's so good:

Nothing says summer is here like the appearance of my bright red face in the mirror. The heat, the sun, the sweat – everything is a trigger. The Dermalogica UltraCalming mist is a fantastic cooling face mist for those with sensitive or sensitised skin that's made to rapidly soothe redness and discomfort.

Too much sun? This mist.

Over exfoliated? This mist.

Got a little redness post-treatment? This mist.

Okay obviously none of that is a prescription, and you should take a trip to your doctor or professional if you've got skin concerns, but I seriously can't understate the calming effects it's had for my skin. It's also free from artificial fragrance and colours and works to boost any skincare you apply on top of it.

Personally, I like to throw this one in my swimming bag so I can mitigate the drying effects of chlorine with a post-pool spritz.

How to Use a Face Mist.

Here are four ways you can use a face mist spray in your beauty routine:

  • Apply to your skin before serums - Dampening the skin with a mist before applying your serums makes it easier for products and their ingredients to penetrate.

  • Prep and finish off your makeup - Different to straight setting sprays, a dewy face mist with some staying power can prep the skin before makeup, and lock everything in once you're done.

  • Refresh your face during the day - Spritzing a face mist throughout the day can revive dehydrated skin (thanks office air con) and keep your face from eating up your makeup.

  • Wake your sleeping partner up in the morning - Kidding, obviously. (Maybe.)

Now, all that's left to do is to decide which glowy mist to make space for in your fridge.
