How Your Body Changes During Pregnancy & Our Beauty Editor's Favourite Products - Beauty IQ Uncensored Episode 5 Transcript
Welcome everybody to Beauty IQ the podcast.
I'm your host, Joanna Fleming
and I am your co- host. Hannah Furst. We're back again, Episode 5
We just keep coming back. You can't keep us away.
I think what I really wanted to say to open this episode was; Thank you so much for all your DM's that you use panty liners every day. Amazing. Now I did have one thing that I wanted to add to that which was, our producer, who is very environmentally conscious, actually has been looking for biodegradable panty liners. So I know the environment is super important. That sounded really um, did not sound genuine. But I actually do give a shit, and a couple of people did message saying like it's bad for the environment and I agree. And so I feel like we've swapped to the period undies now, next panty liners. So we'll definitely be back on that topic with some environmentally friendly options. Tell us what we're talking about today.
So we're talking about the shit people don't tell you before you get pregnant. We're talking about what's in a beauty editors’ bathroom, a k a. Me and also the product we didn't know we needed.
So we have a really special guest today. She is an Adore Beauty staffer. She's just got on maternity leave and we were having a really funny conversation just the other day, and we were like you have to come on the podcast.
So welcome Liv
Hi Guys
Tell us a bit about yourself.
So yes, I work in the customer service team. But I'm on maternity leave. I'm 34 weeks pregnant. And I've come here to talk all things I did not know were going to happen to my body that actually started happening. So as raw and as true, in my experience of pregnancy. I'm sure everyone's got their own journey.
and we could not stop laughing. You played a recording for us. Tell us a bit about that before you play it.
Sure. So my poor husband and I have been sleeping in separate rooms for the past three and 1/2 months. And I was getting depressed, and I'm like 'why don't you want to sleep with? is it cause I'm fat, what's wrong with you?' and he said, 'No babe, like you snore really, really loud'. And I was like, 'No I don't. I do not. I've never been a snorer'. And I was adamant that I wasn't a snorer. And the poor darl. We went away for our baby moon and there was only one bed. So we had to sleep together for the whole week.
Forced him.
Yeah I think he wants to leave me now. Anyway, but he recorded my sleeping, and this is one thing that happened to my body that I thought would never happen. I haven't breathed in three months properly. And this is why...
You sound like a British bulldog
She does!
That is my nose, constantly.
It's a congestion. Like you just feel congested all the time?
24/7.
I've actually heard that from other people too. Already wearing the maternity bras, ready to breast feed as soon as it pops out.
They are big.
They are big mamma jugs. On the topic of, your boobies, we had a conversation in the office before you went on maternity leave. So you're about to pop, when are you due?
14th of October.
Okay, so we're very close now.
Very close.
You voluntarily showed me your nipples.
Yes
because we were having a conversation about the fact that you said they turned brown.
They went brown. So imagine a bit of salami, roasted on a pizza.
Okay.
So like a nice char-grilled salami.
Yeah, and what were they were prior?
kind of like a soft pink
Okay. Like a nice piece of ham
Yes, mortadella ham, nicely shaved. In portion with my boob size
Yep, and now they're a dinner plate salami
No entree nipple, this is like proper mains.
Yeah, Okay.
I want to say that pregnancy with my eyes, I always wanted to be a mum. Took me forever to fall pregnant. And no one tells you what to expect when you actually get a positive. So I think the first thing I noticed changing was my stretch marks on my butt. So story; I was showering one night, and I walked out and my husband was like, 'oh babe, you know, you shouldn't have showers that hot', like the poor baby. He's like, 'you know, you got red marks all over your bottom, what's going on?. And I was like, 'Babe they're stretch marks'. And they covered my whole bottom. So usually I would think stretch marks on your stomach...
Yeah that's what I would have thought
No..
You expand everywhere.
Imagine a zebra.
Okay
Just a zebra's butt. That's my butt. Large and in charge. With stripes. I think, that. Discharge mate, I'm telling you. Like, you have no idea.
That's why this is called a cringey convo.
Yes. I thought I wee-ed my pants in public. I was walking around like, just imagine waddle. And I went to the toilet, and I was like, what is this? So I called my doctor and I was like? 'Hey, am I leaking fluids? or what's going on?'
And they said that's normal..
Normal. Apparently hormones. Everyone should research hormones.
Are you wearing a panty liner every day?
Not today. Have you seen what I'm wearing, in my jumpsuit. You gotta have a nice little...toosh
Even though you've got an 8 month pregnant belly in front
I love that you're like, 'Yeah, I know. I'm wearing my sexiest outfit today'
This is probably as good as it gets.
Yeah, work it.
Work that butt. Those probably were the two biggest things. And the nipples. The nipple was the biggest thing.
Because I think that when, if you hear babies crying. I mean, that was on Grey's Anatomy. I learn all my medical knowledge from Grey's Anatomy.
I don't know if that's the best source
Everything. Sometimes, someone will say things to me and I'm like 'Yeah. I think that there's something wrong with your appendix' and they're like, 'how do you know that?' I learned everything that I know from Grey's Anatomy. So in Grey's Anatomy, there's a crying baby and Miranda, one of the doctors, starts lactating on her scrubs, because she can hear a baby crying
But no, I have definitely heard that. See I get my medical knowledge from House.
Okay
Doctor H. As good as it gets.
I get my medical knowledge from doctors. Real life ones.
So go to you.
Come to us if you want the fake doctor knowledge.
Dr Google.
I know before you fell pregnant, you were struggling with acne prone skin. So has any of that changed or has it gotten worse or?
Your skin is looking really good
It looks really clear
I think when I got off the pill. So I started trying two years prior to actually been able to conceive. So when I got off the pill I noticed my skin just changed dramatically. And I think knowing, when you're going to come off the pill, you expect changes to happen too, you know, your skin, your hormones and all these things.
Yeah
but I didn't think it would be as bad as it got. My pregnancy is an IVF pregnancy. So it was a little bit different to a natural conception. When I started the hormones, my skin just went really bad again. And I tried everything to get rid of it, but being hormonal, you know you can't do much with that. And then as soon as I got pregnant, I noticed, probably by about the second trimester, my skin actually started to.. I got that glow that everyone talks about. and I was like 'oh crap. I actually look good for once' It was really good. As I've gotten further along in the pregnancy. I think my hormones of balanced out a lot more. Therefore my skin isn't as aggravated
Yeah, I was just about to say, it looks really calm and flat, like before you were struggling with texture, and you were struggling with inflammation, and I can't see any of that
Nah it's gone that's gone down a lot
it looks great.
And I've got to say, even though I know you were struggling with that, you always had a smile on your face about it.
You have to.
And you were very much like, it is what it is
You've got to go with the flow don't you. I think everyone has their own expectations. I think for me and for people listening, it's one thing to want to have a baby and you know, you try so hard to get to that and I think my expectation versus the reality. It's so different. I'm so grateful that I'm carrying a baby and I'm going to be a mum. But I swear to God the things that I had no idea about, and I think, it's just funny being so open with other people as well. I think it's a laugh. You got to enjoy it. You got... I'm at 253 days of carrying a baby. I've got a head on my bladder. So when I laugh, a little bit of wee comes out sometimes. So you know, I think you have to embrace every moment of it. But yeah, I think my skin's doing good.
Yeah, I really like, I've really, really enjoyed your attitude towards pregnancy. I know people that have been pregnant, and it's been really hard, like all the things that you're saying. But I always your attitude has always just been- have a laugh about it, and all you can do is laugh.
But also I appreciate the honesty because if I get salami nipples when I'm pregnant then I'll know
Yay it's totally normal!
Like literally, like
She's pulling down the her top.
Is there anything that anybody else has told you about what to expect once the baby comes or about the birth that you're freaked out about?
To be fair, I haven't thought about giving birth yet.
Okay
So we went and did a birthing class, my husband and I, and it was more like, just interesting to see what you're about to push out. Like, that's 10 centimetres. So a baby’s head has got to get through that. But I haven't actually thought about the pain or, you know, they tell me that if you need an episiotomy where they cut you from one end to the other. Haven't actually gone there yet.
I wouldn't recommend it. I wouldn't recommend going there in your mind.
Has it been a really hard decision in terms of what kind of protocol, in terms of pain relief. I know my mom had me and she said, I was a natural birth, and she was like, that was the worst experience of her life. Yeah, and then her two others. She said she had an epidural and ate cucumber sandwiches. It was a completely different experience.
They say get on the carbs before labour
Fuel up. For energy.
But she really like still to this day talks about the natural birth like... Maybe we have a different relationship because of it, I don't know.
She looks at your head and she's like 'damn!'.
Is there any preparation that you do beforehand?
I have no birth plans. I'm very just..
You're open to whatever is suggested..
Yeah I think I have no... Like, here I am thinking I'm tough, like I'm strong, I can do this. And other parts of me are like OK, so when I had my eggs removed to get, to create embryos, I was hunched over, and I was like, 'Oh my God, this is so painful'. And the lady was like, 'you know, you going to have to give birth one day' and I was like, 'yeah, shit'. I don't know what I'm going to be like
Although, it's kind of different because you know you're getting a baby straight away at the end of it. So it's kind of like the reward.
Well that's what I figured. The adrenaline should kick in. But you can do like, there's a tens machine, so the electronic pulses that could go on your back. So you can either do that, that releases endorphins. You know, there's pethidine. There's epidurals, there's gas.
And I do think everyone's pain threshold is different. Back on the laser hair removal thing, I have a friend who has really low pain threshold. She says she actually can't sit there and get it done, and I'm like, I can't feel it. And I guess every person is different.
I've got no plan just yet.
How you feeling about having a baby?
You know what it hasn't hit me. I was sitting on my couch last night and I was like, he was moving and he's kind of like an alien at the moment. I've got a foot in my rib. I was like, I can't believe that in like, six weeks, and I'm literally gonna be holding this like, little boy in my arms. That like, you know, he's 50% of me and 50% of my husband, and it's like, yeah, I want to know why he chose me to be his mom
That's so cute!
But it hasn't hit me yet. Like I think, some days I'm like, you know, I'm just fat. But then the other days I'm like wait, that's a baby. Like I'm actually...
It's a baby, I'm not just fat.
Oh I'm so fat, help me.
You're really not. You look great. I always see pregnant women, and I just think they look really sexy for some reason
It's strange fetish.
I have a question for you, because we wanted to actually cover this on another episode. Would you find it useful... Joanna's mum is actually midwife, and we were going to get her on to talk about, like all the things you didn't expect during birth.
Yes. I love midwives. I think they're amazing. Hats off to them. They're full of knowledge. I like, would message, and be like 'hey do think this is normal? or something like that'. Like having someone who knows. Medically correct. Like here I am just Googling, 'this hurts'...
And you could find anything on Google and make yourself think somethings wrong
I'm having triplets, apparently Google reckons. Do you know what I mean?
It's so close now, what are you most excited about?
You know what, part of me is excited for like, I want my waters to break. I want to have that show and be like, 'Oh my God, I'm in Labour'. It's not that common to happen. Um, but I think I'm just, I'm actually most excited about going into labour and experiencing what's to come and, you know, what am I going to be like? And am I gonna be a 'Hhnnn' am I gonna be like 'Oh my God!'
yeah are you gonna shit yourself, who knows?
Who knows? Apparently that's really common.
It is.
I'll let you know if I have little turd balls at the end of the table.
So onto our next segment, we are going to take a look inside Joanna's bathroom. I actually suggested this to you and said, I really want to know what the top 10 products in your bathroom are.
And that's a very challenging question.
I'm sure it is you.
Because that changes all the time. So the first product on my list is the SkinCeuticals Retexturing Activator. Which I only discovered recently, and I am loving
What's in it?
That's a really good question, because it's not... It says that it mimics the results of retinol, but it doesn't have retinol in it. So it's like an exfoliating product, but it's really gentle on the skin and it just gives you like this flawless texture and I have recommended it to a few people since I got onto it, and they're loving it as well. So it's just awesome for skin texture, clarity. It just makes the skin look really glowy and fresh and rejuvenated. That's how I would describe it.
I feel like you rave about SkinCeuticals a lot.
I do really like the brand. They don't pay me.
As an FYI, their products are really expensive.
Yes
But most people I speak to... To be honest, I don't think I have any SkinCeuticals products in my bathroom. But everyone that speaks about them says it's worth it.
If you're asking for products from me, they're probably going to be expensive.
What's second on the list?
The next on my list is the Estée Lauder Perfectionist Pro Instant Resurfacing Peel.
Now I am really surprised.
So am I
Joanna is a cosmeceutical snob. The worst cosmeceutical snob something you're
I thought you were going to say going to cosmeceutical whore.
You're both a snob and a whore. She does both. I love that, that was the first thing that's come your head. She's a cosmeceutical snob and whore and you've bean raving about Estee Lauder's Perfectionist Pro range now for quite a while. So much so, that she forced Estee Lauder to send me one of their products to try.
So I was really surprised about this because, as you said, I'm a cosmeceutical whore. But I had never really gotten into Estee Lauder skin care before. And then when they sent me the Perfectionist Pro range, I tried this peel and I was like, Holy shit, what is in this stuff? Like you put it on your face for 10 minutes, you rinse it off and you're like, you've got a face.
Renewed.
It's insane. Like I love it so much. It just makes your skin look flawless. And I always use it if I find him having a bit of a break out. And I've got a few different pimples in different spots or I can feel them coming up, I just put it on.
Is it a serum?
No, it's a peel.
So you put it on for 10 minutes, then you take it off
Okay
But it's really quick and easy to do, like I just use cotton rounds to take it off. Next on my list is the Cosmedix Surge Hyaluronic Acid Booster. Which is brand new to Cosmedix, and I use a lot of HA's, so I'm like, 'eh they're kind of all the same'
Every time a new Hyaluronic Acid serum comes onto your desk you're like 'ugh'
So the Surge is a new product. As I said, HA serums are pretty common. They pop up all the time.
What does a HA serum do?
It just really plumps and hydrates the skin. So any skin type can use a Hyaluronic Acid serum, and they will benefit from it. So this one in particular I like because of the consistency. It's not too thin, it's not too thick. It's got a really nice smell. It just lathers on really nicely. And it just leaves your skin feeling fresh and alive and you look young and I just...I'm selling all these product to people
I love the adjectives you're using today.
So yeah, I really like Surge. One of my other HA faves, as you know, is SkinCeuticals HA intensifier. But Surge is the one I've been using lately.
And what's next on the list?
So I was recommended this serum a few weeks ago and I've been using it every day since. It's the Beauté Pacifique Defy Damage serum. And Beauté Pacifique is new to Adore Beauty, and the team just came in to give us these facial scans.
It was actually not a facial scan. It was an ultrasound. And I had an ultrasound. I don't know why she did it. She did it on the right side of my face, under my eyes. She was 'Ooh', because that's where the most sun damage for me is around that area
She gave me an A+
Oh of course she F****** did.
Anyway so she recommended me the serum because I have rosacea on my cheeks and she recommended it because it has Vitamins A, C and E in it. So it's essentially designed to strengthen my skin and get rid of all the damages there and help prevent future damage. I'm really liking it.
It is their best seller.
Yeah, it is their best seller. I don't normally get excited about my daytime skin care a more of a night time skin care girl and I get really into my serums then. But I've really been enjoying this.
How come you can use it in the morning if it's got vitamin A?
They told me to
Oh ok. I actually think I know the answer to that question. It's an ester.
Yes, that's actually true.
That's actually true. I just remembered her telling me that
Yeah, so I'm loving that serum for daytime and my next one is...
I feel like you've got a lot of serums on your list
No, so I'm...
That's ok. We love serums.
We love serums
I'm sorry, I think we are more than cosmeceutical whores, we're serum whores at heart.
We're skin care whores.
No, serum whores. Like I do love...
Everybody asked us about serums after the first episode, so I'm giving you what you want, people
Giving the people what they want.
My next one is the Aspect Fighter Stat Nine Moisturiser, which I recommend to pretty much every person on this earth that messages me about skin care routines. It's just a great all rounder moisturiser. It's suitable for all skin types. I haven't come across a person that doesn't like
Do you use it day and night?
Yes, I do. I've got quite a few moisturisers on rotation, but that is one that I always repurchase. Next is one of my face... I'm going to mention two products from this brand. Can't go pass ASAP
ASAP is genuinely like, Joanna's, one of her favourite brands. She talks about it all the time. Anyone new that starts at Adore, she gets them onto quite a few of their serums and their cleansing gel. I guess, I'm going to guess it's the cleansing gel
It's the cleansing gel. I always recommend this cleansing gel. It's just a great cleanser. It takes off makeup. It removes dirt and grime and sunscreen and everything else on the surface of your skin. But it doesn't make it feel tight and uncomfortable. And it's just...
I just sometimes use Bioderma and nothing else
That's not okay
I know. But then if I use an acid, I feel like the acid is doing the job.
No, that's not right That's not right, is it? I'm like Bioderma, then I'm putting like acid over the top, and I'm like, surely that's cleaned my skin.
Nah mate. That's not how it works. Please use a proper cleanser. While I'm on the topic of ASAP, the super B complex is another, this is my last serum that I'm going to mention. The super B complex has B5 and B3 in it. As we mentioned in Episode one, those two ingredients are really good for the skin that just makes you super glowy. You use that as well.
I Do.
I just love recommending that two people, because they come back to me and they're like, this is great, I love it
I think all the serums on that list, I've only tried one.
Really? I do
I do have Surge. I'm really excited to try it.
So I'm going to go into hair care now because these are in my bathroom. By the way, I'm not mentioning any makeup because my makeup isn't in my bathroom
You said this before and I'm like, where does your makeup sit?
In my room
Why?
Because it has to. I've got too much stuff. So Olaplex number six is new. That is a smoothing lotion. I think it is.
Yes. It's a smoothing styling cream.
So I use that after I've washed my hair, on damp hair. And then I dry my Dyson Supersonic, which was the next product on my list, because the Supersonic is the best.
Only if you blow dry your hair. Do you remember the other day I said, 'I don't know if I'm going to have time to do my hair because I have to let it dry' and you were like, 'don't you have a hair dryer?' And I was like, 'No..'
yeah, I can't get my head around that, because my hair doesn't dry naturally, but it holds so much water.
Just go to sleep and wake up and you have a big Afro. That's what my hair does
My hair would just go flat onto my scalp and wouldn't dry and it would go oily and gross. Yeah, I have to dry it. So I feel good drying it with the Dyson Supersonic because it's not causing as much damage as a traditional hair dryer would. Then I've got my favourite shampoo and conditioner at the moment; is Iles Formula. I talked about this in another episode, I can't remember which one. Still loving it. So just thought I'd drop that in there
You talked about the hair turban. I think there's so many shampoos and conditions out there. What is it about this one that you love so much?
So it's suitable for every hair type. But the main thing is that it's got silk proteins in it, and I find that the shampoo specifically doesn't leave my hair really knotty when I wash it. Like, you rinse the shampoo out and it's like it's detangled your hair, which is really unusual for me because I've got fine hair and a lot of it, and it gets really knotty when I wash it.
That's a good recommendation, that shampoo and conditioner for just any hair type, that's just, you don't have any issues
Whereas I have so many issues with my hair that I...
Maybe they'd be solved if you used Iles Formula
No I just have to use a few specialised products for all the issues that I'm dealing with my hair. Did you see the photo that I sent you of my hair yesterday? That if I don't do anything to it. It was a mess.
She had a migraine yesterday. She sent me a photo of her. And it was like looking at Hagrid.
Yes, that's exactly what it was. That's exactly... Now, do you understand why I can't be bothered doing my hair? It takes so much effort.
In fairness like, my hair, I ran a straightener over my hair this morning, which I probably didn't need to cause it's already straight.
Did you see me the other day trying to straighten my hair, at my desk?
It was actually making me anxious, watching you,.
It would not straighten! It just it will not straighten. It doesn't want to straighten, and it won't straighten.
It looked like it was taxing on you. Like you were just so tired,
I was just like, over the same piece over and over and over.
Yeah. I feel sorry for you. Anyway, so that's my top 10 products at the moment, in my bathroom. Don't hold me to this. It will change probably in the next month. But you can look at my gram if you want to know what I'm using.
So finally for our last segment, it is...
the product we didn't know we needed it. I feel like this segment is actually going to become the products I think you need.
Not you, the people listening to this.
Yes, I think so. I was looking at Hannah as I said that
But that's true, too. Anyway, yours will be more advanced. Mine will be more basic
Yes. Why don't you give us yours first
Yeah so I just said to Jo, 'can I do concealer, is that too basic?' And she was like, 'Yes, but if that's really the products you didn't know that you needed, then do it'
No you said, 'I should do concealer because I never used that before'
Yeah so, I'd never used concealer before. I don't know...
before you started at Adore Beauty, a year ago.
Yeah so before I started at Adore a year ago, I'd never used concealer before. I didn't own a concealer. Then I saw people that, maybe I saw you like doing your under eye. Or maybe we were in a master class and I saw people doing the concealer under the and I was like, 'I wonder what that's for?' And I thought it was for wrinkles. Remember I asked you, I asked you, I was like 'I just have a question...' and you were so like, 'are you serious?'
I just couldn't believe that you didn't know
I thought people did it for wrinkles. And then it looked on YouTube and this lady was talking about using concealer over 30. She was like, 'you know, to stop it from getting into your wrinkles and creases you should do this'. And I was like, 'Oh, so maybe it's not for wrinkles'. And then I realised it was for brightening. And then I started using it and my eyes as soon as I put it on just, like, completely look awake. I was really surprised. I also didn't know you needed concealer two shades lighter. So I bought one that was two shades lighter
Which one do you have?
I was initially using a concealer that you had to set with setting powder. Because I'm really low maintenance, I've swapped to the Makeup Forever Ultra HD concealer, and that is self setting. So I really really like that one. And it's not too heavy and thick
Yeah, that's the one I use as well.
So it's less likely, I think to get into the creases. Is that that correct?
Yeah, it does crease because it's really light weight. If you guys want to see us sue it, we did a beginner masterclass a while ago, which is on our IGTV.
Yes. So, what was your product? That you didn't know you needed
My product that I didn't know I needed- about a year ago have since posted this on my personal Instagram, I reckon about 15 times and told people to buy it because I'm so obsessed with it. It's the Aspect Gold Probiotic Sleep Mask. It is heaven. You still haven't used it have you?
I still haven't used it
Don't look at me like that.
I know, I'm sorry.
Hannah. I have, like, no joke, I've told her probably 30 times to use this.
Well, why don't you sell it to me now? Tell me why I need to buy it. I don't need to buy any new beauty products.
Yeah, but you were telling me a while ago that your skin was really, like angry.
It was really angry
and sensitive. And I told you use this and you didn't do it. Anyway, so this product is really calming and soothing. It's got the probiotic, prebiotic ingredients in it. It's also got really nourishing oils and things like that as well. It's perfect for dry and dehydrated skin or skin that's really stressed out or having a reaction to something. I always put it on when my skin just feels a bit sensitive. Leave it on overnight and I wake up the next day and I'm glowing.
I was going to say, you'll sell me if it's a glowy mask.
I've told you this! it's a glowing mask.
Well I... stressed out skin thing I get, but also I want to glow.
It's just really nice for repair. Anyone could use it and they would love it. I'm pretty sure I don't think anyone who I have recommended to has said they don't like it. So that's my sell to you. Take it or leave it.
I think I have to hear something five times before I do it.
I think I've told you more than 5 times. It's a really, really nice mask. It smells amazing. You can wear it overnight. You can wear it as a moisturiser if you want to. It's not thick so you're not going to notice it on your face as you sleep. It's just like a rich moisturiser.
That was an eye opener of an episode. Wasn't it?
It certainly was.
Well, how do you feel about getting pregnant now?
Well, I feel more informed. So if you're planning to fall pregnant or you are pregnant, I hope that some of that content resonated on a deeper level with you. Hannah and I at least now know what we're in for if we fall pregnant
I just want to clear up a little, I think, misconception. We had someone write a review that was like, 'You only talk about Adore Beauty products'. But what we want to say is that we actually don't just talk about Adore Beauty products
Because we don't sell Botox, we don't sell period undies, we don't sell panty liners
Yeah, we don't sell those things. So the cringy convos like, we genuinely use those products.
Everything that Hannah and I talk about is... they're products that we both love and use and recommend to our own friends and family. So, please know you guys are our friends and family too
You're part of this with
So, no we're not paid or sponsored to talk about specific products. I just harp on about the same shit all the time.
She does. If I hear about the Aspect Mask, one more time... Cool guys. We'll see you next week.
