Sun protection is becoming more and more important to me as I get older, and the more I educate myself on sun protection and exposure, the more I gravitate towards the shade.
This year, La Roche-Posay was the official sunscreen partner of the Australian Open, providing pop-up sunscreen stations throughout the grounds for anyone to use – and I learnt a thing or two.
But despite the cold hard facts, it seems many of us aren’t taking sun protection seriously enough – so I thought I’d share some important statistics with you:

The Stats

  • Skin cancers account for around 80% of newly diagnosed cancers in Australia
  • Just five sunburns in your lifetime can double your risk of skin cancer
  • Approximately 95% of melanomas are caused by sun exposure
  • Melanoma kills more young people in Australia than any other cancer
  • Our skin ages 20 years faster than women in the US & UK
If those facts don’t compel you to be more diligent with sun protection, then you need to visit Call Time On Melanoma, a not-for-profit initiative raising awareness around melanoma.

Now To Sunscreen

A common complaint I hear is that people aren’t wearing sunscreen because they hate the feel or the smell of it. My solution is finding the right sunscreen for you, which could be La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios XL Ultra Light SPF 50+.
  • This sunscreen provides the highest in Australian UVA/UVB protection
  • It has a lightweight texture which blends in seamlessly & absorbs quickly
  • Leaves no greasy or sticky residue behind, making it great for wearing under makeup
  • Helps to balances the skin’s moisture levels to regulate oil production
  • The non-comedogenic formula won’t aggravate acne-prone skin types
  • It’s enriched with antioxidants to fight against environmental damageThe Teaspoon Rule
A lot sunburns tend to occur because we either a) aren’t applying enough sunscreen in the first place, or b) aren’t reapplying regularly as directed.
Half a teaspoon of Anthelios XL Ultra Light SPF 50+ is enough to protect the face and neck, and reapplication every 2 hours is key if you’re spending time directly in the sun.
