Being a cosmetic doctor doesn’t mean my own skin behaves itself. Mine is acne-prone and sensitive, and best believe different hormonal stages of my life have brought very different versions of it. Sometimes incredibly oily, sometimes more reactive and prone to redness. It has kept me on my toes.
I do love a good active ingredient and I am not shy about using them. However, I find that my skin only tolerates actives well when my skin barrier is supported. When I have neglected my skin barrier, my skin is less forgiving, and it definitely lets me know!
Looking into barrier-supporting ingredients and products, I have been putting the new SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective PDRN Serum to the test.
I have been using the serum morning and night for the past four weeks and here are my thoughts on the product and what PDRN actually brings to the conversation.
First, oily skin still needs hydration
Having oily, acne-prone skin can make you a little suspicious of anything hydrating. When your face already looks shiny by lunchtime, adding moisture to your routine might feel like the last thing it needs. But oil and hydration are different things. You can have plenty of oil on the surface and still have skin that feels dehydrated, tight or irritated.
Your skin barrier is the outermost protective layer of your skin. It helps keep water in and irritating substances out. When that barrier is disrupted, you might notice stinging, flaking, redness or products suddenly feeling uncomfortable. You may also find yourself in a vicious cycle of new breakouts. I see this commonly in clinic with my patients too. Too often patients neglect the barrier and focus on active ingredients that upsets the skin barrier and microbiome.
So here is your PSA: Supporting your skin barrier belongs in an acne-prone routine too. It doesn’t have to wait until everything starts stinging.
Skinceuticals PDRN serum benefits
In this serum, the biotech PDRN is included to help support barrier recovery and soothe visible redness.
You might also associate PDRN with salmon DNA, but SkinCeuticals uses a non-animal-derived biotech source, Lactobacillus sakei. There is a distinction here, though: a PDRN serum isn’t the equivalent of an injectable treatment. The way an ingredient is delivered matters, so we can’t take findings from injectable PDRN and assume a topical product will do the same thing. That’s why I’m more interested in the testing behind the finished serum than the ingredient’s popularity alone.
Skinceuticals PDRN serum ingredients
There’s more to the formula than the headline ingredient.
PDRN might get the attention, but I never judge a serum on one ingredient alone.
This formula also contains glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which help attract and hold water in the skin, alongside ectoin for moisture-barrier support. There’s also tripeptide-8 and a botanical blend including cucumber, olive leaf and thyme, included to help soothe skin.
For me, that’s the more useful conversation: how the whole formula supports hydration and skin comfort, rather than how exciting one ingredient sounds. And “soothing” still doesn’t guarantee that every sensitive skin will love it. Individual tolerance always matters.
What does the research say and how did I find it?
I always like to look beyond the headline ingredient and see what’s been tested in the actual formula. In the brand’s study of 55 people using the serum twice daily for eight weeks, it reported a 20% reduction in visible redness, a 24% improvement in skin texture and a 10% reduction in post-acne marks. Separate instrumental testing involving 26 people found a 40% improvement in skin moisture barrier recovery after four hours compared with baseline.
My SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective PDRN Serum review

Those are the study findings, rather than a promise of what everyone will experience. I’ve only been using it for four weeks, but I’ve already noticed a clear reduction in my redness. And, because I know this will be a big question for anyone with acne-prone skin: it didn’t break me out. Everyone’s skin is different, but that’s always something I’m mindful of when introducing a new product.
The texture was another big plus for me. It’s extremely lightweight for something that feels so hydrating, and it layered really nicely with my moisturiser and SPF. That makes using it morning and night pretty easy.
Where does it fit into a routine?
I’d think of this as a supporting step for hydration and visible redness, alongside the basics: gentle cleansing, an appropriate moisturiser and daily sunscreen.
A supportive serum also isn’t permission to push through irritation from the rest of your routine. If your skin is burning, persistently red or uncomfortable, reducing the intensity or frequency of your actives may be more helpful than adding another product. My own skin has taught me that I don’t need to be doing the most at every stage of my life. Sometimes I can use more actives; sometimes I need to pull things back. Paying attention to that has become a much bigger part of how I look after my skin. A routine should be able to change with you.
