The Ordinary’s Discontinued Salicylic Acid Serum Is Back & We Have Thoughts

It was an otherwise ordinary day in 2019 when affordable beauty brand The Ordinary discontinued their cult salicylic acid serum, shattering hearts and skincare routines around the world.

One minute, the beloved exfoliating serum for blemish-prone skin was refining skin texture, unclogging congested pores and reducing the look of blackheads.

And the next, gone.

Thousands of people in beauty and skincare Reddit threads were all asking the same questions.

"What happened to The Ordinary salicylic acid?"

"What's the best The Ordinary salicylic acid dupe?"

For the last two years, the brand has been working on perfecting their The Ordinary salicylic acid serums to make them just as (or even more) effective as the original, without the irritation some users reported.

More than 400K loyal salicylic acid serum fans even joined the website's waiting list to be notified the second it came back into stock.

Find out why everyone's obsessed with salicylic acid in our helpful YouTube video below.

In some excellent news, both of The Ordinary's salicylic acid serums are back and available in Australia.

We've got the The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Anhydrous Solution (in the amber bottle), and the new-and-improved The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution.

Oh, and don't forget about the beloved The Ordinary salicylic acid mask.

That's a lot of salicylic acid to choose from, so which salicylic acid product from The Ordinary is right for you?

What Is The Ordinary Salicylic Acid Serum?

Before it was discontinued in order to be reformulated, the cult salicylic acid The Ordinary serum was a favourite of oily, blemish-prone skin-havers.

Many turned to The Ordinary salicylic acid mask to manage breakouts.

It's an excellent product with a fun texture you can peel off, but it wasn't the same.

Thankfully, you can now choose between two The Ordinary salicylic acid serums:

1. The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution.

  • The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution - 30ml is the same cult favourite, but with a formula that's even better than the original.

  • Contains 2% salicylic acid, which is the highest percentage recommended for use in skin care.

  • The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution is best suited to use by those with blemish or congestion-prone skin, especially those with normal to combination or oily skin types.

  • Penetrates deep into pores to clear out excess oil and the bacteria that can cause congestion.

  • Vegan and cruelty-free formula is also alcohol, oil, silicone, nut, and gluten-free.

2. The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Anhydrous Solution.

  • The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Anhydrous Solution boasts the same salicylic acid serum strength of 2%.

  • Promises to exfoliate skin texture, refine the look of pores, and target blackheads and breakouts.

  • A squalane base minimises irritation common with using salicylic acid products.

  • Water-free serum for gentle exfoliation and pore decongestion.

Don't forget, always wear a broad spectrum SPF50+ sunscreen in the morning, especially when using exfoliating acids in your PM routine.

The Ordinary Salicylic Acid Reviews.

I'm all for choosing skincare products based on your skin type.

I have dry skin prone to dehydration, which usually results in semi-regular breakouts along my chin and jawline.

I've been using The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Anhydrous Solution as a spot treatment on my aforementioned chimples (aka chin pimples).

If you have oily or combination skin, The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution - 30ml would be the better The Ordinary salicylic acid serum for you.

The main difference I've noticed between The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution vs. The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Anhydrous Solution is the texture.

Because The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Anhydrous Solution contains squalane, which is a lipid or fatty substance, the clear serum has an oily texture along with a very, very faint deli meat smell.

If you've ever tried The Ordinary's retinol in squalane serums, they feel very similar, rather than the lighter, watery texture of the original salicylic acid serum.

Same goes for the scent if you're familiar with The Ordinary's best-selling Squalane Cleanser.

Oilier skin types might prefer the clear, silky texture of the new-and-improved The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution, however my dry skin breakouts quite enjoy the extra nourishment from the oil.

The Ordinary Salicylic Acid Before and After.

For maybe the first time ever, I wasn't completely bummed when a cohort of hormonal breakouts made themselves known on my lower face a day before a special occasion.

It was the perfect opportunity to road-test the new serum and document my The Ordinary salicylic acid before and after results.

Even better, I did precisely what I'd always say not to do and squished the heck out of my pimples when they weren't anywhere near ready.

This gave the salicylic acid serum some angry, inflamed breakouts to work with.

After cleansing, applying my usual hydrating serum and moisturiser at night, I popped a very small amount of the salicylic acid serum directly onto my blemishes.

Off to bed I went. Exhibit A.

Because the serum texture is fairly oily, I found I only needed the tiniest amount. A little does go a long way, especially if you're planning on using this serum as a spot treatment.

My breakouts had improved slightly by the morning, but I continued using the serum each night, just on the pimples.

Within 48 hours, my breakouts looked significantly better.

Rather than being whiteheads filled with pus, the spots had begun to heal and flatten.

Four days later, a few small pink post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation marks were the only sign the cystic breakouts had been there at all.

Overall, my dry skin prefers The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Anhydrous Solution over the beloved original.

As always, though, do what works for your skin, not mine.
