The New Unisex Scent That Made It Into Our Fragrance Buyer's Signature Scent Wardrobe

Some people collect shoes. Others, movie tickets or fridge magnets. I collect fragrances... which makes a lot of sense because I'm the Senior Fragrance Buyer at Adore Beauty.

I realised pretty early on I was never going to be satisfied with just one signature scent. From the first fragrance I ever fell in love with - my mother's Coco Chanel - to luxury niche fragrances, my obsession with scents is my version of travel albums.

Like Maison Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Universalis, from the Parisian department store Le Bon Marché. Or the bottle of Bal D'Afrique I purchased from the original Byredo store in Stockholm. Tom Ford White Suede entered my life in New York's Saks Fifth Avenue. And my very first signature scent, Le Labo Santal 33, which I found in Liberty’s, London's luxury department store.

Is my fragrance collection worth more than my car? Perhaps. But for this travel-lover, fragrance has become a fond way to remember my experiences.

Why I Think Everyone Should Have A Signature Scent Wardrobe.

Fast forward to when I started working at Adore. It was while expanding our range to include luxury niche fragrances and candles that I met the man who would introduce me to the concept of having a 'fragrance wardrobe'.

The fabulous Mr Smart, who owns the most prestigious luxury fragrance empire in Australia, spoke to me about building a wardrobe of signature scents to suit any occasion and every mood.

"You don't just have one pair of shoes to wear with everything for every occasion," he told me. As someone who owns way too many shoes that are all black but entirely different, this resonated with me.

I've been building my signature scent wardrobe ever since, and strangers literally stop me in the street to ask me what perfume I'm wearing. People remember a scent you wore more than a dress or a bag... and I've received way more compliments on my fragrances than I ever have on my outfits.

Recently, I'd whittled down my collection to Juliette Has A Gun Not A Perfume and BDK Gris Charnel (not everything can make the cut, can it?). And now, meet my latest obsession, Maison Crivelli.

What Is Maison Crivelli?

Maison Crivelli is a new luxury fragrance brand to Adore Beauty, and even though I'd never choose between my favourite fragrance children, this brand delivers everything I look for in a signature scent.

Modern, innovative and complicated, each Maison Crivelli unisex scent represents an experience the young French founder Thibaud Crivelli collected while travelling across five continents over the last decade.

Close your eyes and you could be smelling scorched sandalwood on the slopes of an erupting volcano. Or zigzagging across a cocoa plantation on a motorbike in Vietnam. How about tasting absinth under the Northern lights, or crossing a Moroccan dessert?

To this traveller who hasn't been able to use her passport in a while, all of the above sound delightful.

The small batch fragrances made with raw materials also combine luxe, minimalist design with sustainability initiatives, like FSC paper boxes, no plastics and biodegradable cellophane. Every bottle is truly unique, from the unpolished metal cap stamped with the Maison Crivelli logo, to how the colour of the fragrance changes with each small batch.

I've added three Maison Crivelli scents to my ever-expanding fragrance wardrobe already. But there's one in particular I've fallen head over heels for...

My Maison Crivelli Papyrus Moleculaire EDP Review.

Let's start with the description of Maison Crivelli Papyrus Moleculaire EDP 100ml because it conjures up quite the picture:

"A bold, gender-neutral scent. Powdery yet spicy. Smoky and intense. Rebellious and elegant. The scent of discovering the little-known papyrus root powder with a group of tattooed women smoking cigarillos."

If you're into your fragrance families, this one sits in the Woody family. It's creamy and spicy, but light enough you can wear it during the day to the office. But a hint of a smoky cigar transports you to a far away underground bar with a hidden door only the locals know about.

The combination of head notes (what you smell first), heart notes (what you smell after 20-60 minutes) and base notes (what you smell hours later) makes this fragrance truly unique because it transforms the longer you wear it.

Here's the fragrance notes breakdown:

  • Head - Elemi. Black Pepper. Coriander.

  • Heart - Papyrus. Iris. Carrot Seed.

  • Base - Tonka Bean. Tobacco. Frankincense. Leather.

I always tell friends and colleagues to wait before deciding how they feel about this scent. Let me know what you think of it after 20 minutes, then an hour, and several hours later. It's kind of like getting a few different scents in one.

So, who would love this fragrance? Maison Crivelli Papyrus Moleculaire is completely unique, but if I had to compare it, I'd say fans of cult soft, woody fragrances like Le Labo Santal 33 will enjoy this (along with the slightly more cost-effective price tag!).

You can find Maison Crivelli Papyrus Moleculaire in a 30ml bottle or a 100ml size. And if you or someone you know is just as obsessed with fragrances as I am, the brand also has this Maison Crivelli Sample Coffret 8 x 1.5ml that comes with eight mini fragrances in one.

P.S. The best part about purchasing a fragrance like this one from Adore Beauty's The Scent Room, is that every full-size purchase comes with a free sample vial so you can try it before opening the bottle. If it's not love at first smell (or you're not into it after wearing it for a few days), you can send it back unopened for a refund.
