How To Not Wash Your Hair (And Still Make It Look Good)

While motherhood may have flipped my world upside down in so many ways, becoming a mum has most personally victimised me in the way I style my hair every day…or should I say in the way I no longer style my hair every day.

Mainly due to lack of time.

You see while babies and toddlers can be pretty damn cute, they really don’t seem to GAF what you look like. And while I do genuinely love the process of doing my hair on the daily, it just doesn’t seem to be a feasible concept at the moment. That's how I’ve managed to learn to make my blow dry last – at least for five days.

Plus, doesn’t washing your hair sometimes feel like an arduous task? The time! The effort! Not to mention the skills. So let’s break down how we can all wash our hair less – and still make it look good (CC'ing in everyone trying to keep their sh*t together in self-isolation).

DAY ONE: Hair Washing Day

Ok, this is the day where you genuinely need ALL the products. However, because you’re washing your hair less, I personally justify investing a little more in the products I use – because you’re basically saving yourself cash and minimising wastage: #justified.

Start by shampooing your hair with products that best suit your hair type and concerns. I love evo the therapist hydrating shampoo 300ml, and always follow with evo the great hydrator moisture mask 150ml. Both give you bang for your buck and up the hydration/condition of your hair if it’s prone to heat or colour damage.

Olaplex Hair Perfector No.3 Home Treatment is another genuinely amazing treatment worth the investment (in my humble opinion). I sometimes even sleep in it before rinsing out. Thinner hair can then follow with a heat protectant mist/spray such as Color WOW Dream Coat Supernatural Spray which fights frizz, will hold your style and protect your hair. Thicker hair types can opt for a cream or oil before blow drying such as MOROCCANOIL Original Oil Treatment or Shu Uemura Ultimate Reset Extreme Restoration Duo Serum 30ml.

DAY TWO: My Favourite Day

It’s got a naturally messy, bed hair vibe going on and is genuinely easy to play with. You can start by using a little dry shampoo on the roots such as Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk Tinted- legit a holy grail product and doesn’t leave white residue on dark hair.

I also love the IGK BEACH CLUB Texture Spray which makes you look like you naturally have woken up with killer bed hair sans trying. Side note: the trick on day two is NOT to overload the hair with product because most of the time it will tend to sit nicely without product anyway.

Quickly going over any stray bits of hair with your hair dryer (I recommend Dyson Supersonic Black Nickel or the ghd Helios hairdryer Black) will be the key to making your blow dry last over the coming days.

DAY THREE: Enjoy It While You Can

Today is genuinely the last day you’ll be able to wear your hair down without feeling like your hair needs to be washed. It does take a little more work on this day though, because your hair will feel messier/greasier.

Straightening tools such as the Cloud Nine C9 Iron will be your BFF so you can achieve a *totally deliberate* sleek look, with a side or centre part and your hair tucked neatly behind your ears with the help of a tail comb or unused toothbrush.

An accessory like a hair clip or headband won't go astray on Day Three, my friends - and I'd also be inclined to use something like O&M Frizzy Logic Shine Serum to keep flyaways at bay and amp up shine.

DAY FOUR: Dry Shampoo

Day four is all about two words: Dry shampoo! Dry shampoo! Dry shampoo! Also: slicking your hair back/up/into a bun – whatever. Just make sure it’s out of your face so people don’t realise how long it’s been since you’ve washed your hair and start to think you’re letting yourself go. Which we probably all are (but nobody needs to know that).

Anyway, a fun fact about dry shampoo is that it was made for absorbing oil (which your hair should be full of by now) and while it’s not going to wash your hair when it’s been at least three days between washes it will a trusty ride or die product you really shouldn’t be without.

You can apply liberally on this day too before you slick it back, or up in whatever way you like. I recommend the Eleven Give me Clean Hair Dry Shampoo which is the best size and smells amazing – something that is also much needed on this day. Or if traditional dry shampoo isn't your vibe, give R+Co Spiritualized a go, it's a micellar cleansing mist for the hair.

DAY FIVE: We're Back To The Start

Day five, yay! You made it! It’s wash hair day again…. and nobody noticed how far you let yourself slide. See? It wasn't that challenging, was it? In fairness, we didn't throw in a very sweaty workout, or baby vomit in your hair, but this routine should work a majority of the time. Now you can start all over again.
