This Is the Best Vitamin C Serum Under $70 I’ve Tried (& I’ve Tried a Lot)

Ask anyone for their holy grail skincare ingredient, and many will tell you it's vitamin C.

The correct answer, of course, is sunscreen.

However, I'll accept vitamin C as a very close second.

There are so many benefits to using a vitamin C serum in the morning under your moisturiser and SPF.

Things like how it can help fade the look of hyperpigmentation and even out your skin tone.

Vitamin C can also protect the skin from age-accelerating free radicals, while repairing existing environmental damage.

The instant brightness and long-term skin radiance is pretty great, too.

But finding a vitamin C serum that suits your skin type, delivers the results you want AND fits in your budget can be tricky.

Sound familiar?

Viviology Vitamin C Serum 30mL might be what you've been looking for.

I called it when we first launched Viviology at Adore Beauty, and I stand by it.

The Viviology vitamin C is the best vitamin C serum under $70 I've tried.

I promised more details when I wrote my original Viviology skincare breakdown on Beauty IQ, so keep scrolling for my full Viviology vitamin C serum review.

What Is Vitamin C for Skin Again?

A quick refresher on why skin experts rate vitamin C serums so highly.

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient, but it's also an active ingredient found in skincare.

While the antioxidant is very good at the whole glowy skin thing, vitamin C is a notoriously unstable ingredient that doesn't agree with everyone.

Different vitamin C derivatives will suit different skin types, here are some of the most common vitamin C forms you'll find on product ingredients lists:

  • Ascorbic acid/L-ascorbic acid - The most potent and effective, water-soluble, but can be unstable and irritating for some skins.

  • Ethyl ascorbic acid - Commonly found in vitamin C serums, gentle, stable, water-soluble.

  • Sodium ascorbyl phosphate - Gentle, stable, water-soluble.

  • Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate - Gentle, stable, water-soluble.

  • Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate - Gentle, stable, oil-soluble.

Watch this YouTube video below for more on the different types of vitamin C (and which one's better for you!).

A lot of products say 'vitamin C' or 'pure vitamin C' on the packaging.

But the best way to determine whether a vitamin C serum is beginner friendly or more of an advanced option is to check the vitamin C derivative(s) in the ingredients list.

Anything with ascorbic acid/L-ascorbic acid will generally be fairly potent and suited to skin types that aren't easily irritated.

If vitamin C serums usually irritate your skin or break you out, try a product containing one of the gentler vitamin C derivatives.

Or, give these brightening vitamin C alternatives a go.

What Is the Viviology Vitamin C Serum?

Viviology Vitamin C Serum 30mL is a brightening, antioxidant-rich serum formulated with 15% L-ascorbic acid.

In other words: Glow, baby, glow.

Viviology vitamin C serum defends against free-radical damage while helping to fade the look of hyperpigmentation for a brighter, more even-looking complexion.

The cosmeceutical (or active) skincare brand is also Australian-made, vegan and cruelty-free.

What's in this serum?

  • 15% L-Ascorbic Acid: A high percentage of the vitamin C derivative clinically-proven to be the most effective and potent.

  • Ferulic Acid: An antioxidant that enhances the potency of vitamin C while also helping to target fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots and other signs of premature ageing.

  • Native Australian plant extracts like Australian kakadu plum, finger lime and lemon myrtle water provide vitamin C with even more support so it can do its job.

  • Phaeodactylum tricornutum (algae) extract: Reduces the look of skin redness and provides hydration.

How to Use a Vitamin C Serum.

Vitamin C serums are best applied in the morning because our skin is most exposed to environmental damage during the day.

After cleansing, apply one pump and press the serum into the skin.

Next, add your hydrating or niacinamide serums, followed by moisturisers and sunscreen.

If you find vitamin C serums irritating, try the 'cushioning' or 'cocktailing' techniques.

Cushioning or softening the blow of the vitamin C serum by applying a hydrating serum first may reduce irritation.

Or better yet, cocktail or mix your vitamin C and hydrating serums together. It won't dilute the potency, but this technique allows you to use product more sparingly.

Before you go adding this to cart, it's important to figure out if a potent vitamin C serum like this one will work for your skin.

For example, Beauty IQ Uncensored podcast co-host Joanna found the Viviology vitamin C serum a bit too spicy for her rosacea-prone skin.

Ever had a reaction (redness, inflammation, breakouts) to a potent L-ascorbic acid serum in the past?

Approach this one with caution. Apply on top of your hydrating serum every other morning, and see if your skin likes it.

I just love everything about this vitamin C serum. Everything.

Let's start with the runny, silky lightweight texture you see above.

One pump goes a long way and feels like nothing on the skin after 60 seconds or so.

Some won't, but I also enjoy the subtle spicy meat scent - if you know, you know - because I associate it with powerful antioxidant serums.

Viviology's minimalist branding is cute and gender neutral, but practical, too.

The solid pump packaging keeps light and oxygen out, and stops the serum from going off.

I'm obsessed with the instant glow this serum leaves behind, and how it's brightened my complexion and added clarity to my naturally-freckly skin with consistent use over time.

But the thing that's impressed me most is how the brand has formulated a high-performing product that sacrifices nothing, with a price tag that feels criminal.

I'm not the only one who thinks so.

Dermal therapist and Beauty IQ contributor Yads Cauchi (pictured below) recently went on the record saying this Viviology product is "probably the best budget-friendly vitamin C serum" she's ever tried.

"It's totally unheard for a vitamin C formula like this one to cost less than $70. It’s witchcraft - but I’m obsessed!"

"The watery texture is a little hard to play with at first, but it layers beautifully with all my morning serums, isn’t sticky and works well under makeup."

Beauty expert and Mamamia's Executive Editor Leigh Campbell also named Viviology's vitamin C serum as a 'savey' on the You Beauty podcast.

"This is such a good vitamin C serum. It is so brightening and juicy and plumping and delicious, I am so into it," she said.

"It's very, very watery... like a really powerful, good water. If you're looking for an affordable vitamin C serum, this is it."

Here are some more 5-star Viviology vitamin C serum reviews from presumably glowing AB customers:

"This vit C is such a beautiful consistency, not sticky or thick. It absorbs nicely into the skin and whenever I use it, I wake up the next day with a more even skin tone, a smoother texture and a brighter complexion overall. LOVE!" - CK.

"As someone with sensitive skin, I sometimes find vitamin C a bit too harsh, but this one has been great." - Harriet.

"I read the ingredients of this new vit C and I knew I had to try it! The price is good and after trying it for several weeks, I can confirm it plays well with makeup and other skincare. Love this product!" - Agi.

So, what are you waiting for??
