5 Things I Learned at Our Sex Masterclass

Heads up, this article includes sexual wellness products from our Adore Beauty sex category. Now, onwards!

My school sex education was about as extensive as IKEA flatpack instructions.

There were STDs, pregnancy scares and that childbirth video that’s permanently burned into my brain.

For my first-ever sex ed lesson, we were split into two classrooms—boys and girls— and given some paper and pencils to write down our burning questions before slipping them into a wooden box.

Naturally, as fifth graders, our questions were pretty innocent (and hilariously inaccurate).

"Can you get pregnant from kissing?", "Why don't boys have boobs?" or, my favourite, “How are we meant to get a tampon up our butt?”. Bless our misguided little souls.

Like many of us brought up in the ‘90s and ‘00s, absence was the name of the game.

It wasn’t until years later when I moved schools that I truly learned about the birds and bees, but by that point, I had already torn through the sealed sections of my sister’s stack of Dolly magazines that I’d “borrowed” (stole).

As for everything else, I had trusty Dr Google to rely on. And The Sims, of course.

Fast forward to now and I’d like to say I’m sex-literate.

It may have taken a little while, but I’ve managed to shed (most of) the shame and awkwardness surrounding conversations about sex that so many feel.

So when we hosted a sex masterclass for our Adore Society members, I was like sign. me. up.

I'm always up for learning something new, especially when it comes to a topic as important as this one.

Now, let’s talk about sex, baby.

Keep scrolling for five things I learned at our sex masterclass.

1. Pleasure Mapping.

I’ll kick things off with perhaps my favourite tidbit from the masterclass: pleasure mapping.

Here's the gist: you explore and stimulate those erogenous zones that send shivers down your spine.

We're talking about the classics like armpits, lower abdomen, mouth, neck, breasts, bum, shoulders, lower back, and, of course, the genitals.

You’re going to experiment with different speeds, pressures, rhythms, textures, and even temperatures.

The purpose of pleasure mapping is to become well-versed in what turns you on. Armed with this knowledge, you can confidently guide a partner toward the pleasure you crave or steer them away from the things that don't quite float your boat.

In short, it's all about enhancing your sexual experiences and taking them to the next level.

Now, experts suggest setting aside 30 minutes of uninterrupted you-time for the exercise.

And hey, feel free to bring some props. Sex toys, lubricants, lingerie, soft fabrics, essential oils—whatever tickles your fancy. You might even invite your partner to the party, too.

Oh, and a quick note for our vulva owners: take your time.

Building arousal might require a bit more TLC, so creating a sensual environment is key. Set the mood by treating yourself to a luxurious bath, moisturising your body, or listening to your favourite playlist.

Remember, pleasure mapping isn’t about the destination. It’s about savouring the moments along the way.

So slow down and enjoy yourself. Let’s bid farewell to performance pressure and embrace the art of maximising pleasure.

Keen to give pleasure mapping a try? These can help you get there:

2. The Science of Pleasure.

As a vulva owner, I’m well aware that it can take a *minute* to reach the same level of arousal as a penis owner, but I had no idea that it takes on average 17 minutes (!!).

Yep, you read that right. It can take 17 minutes for the vulva to be primed for penetration.

Now, keep in mind that this is just an average and everyone's journey to arousal is unique.

Your body and your mental state play significant roles, too. Factors like stress, hormone imbalances, negative body image, or even certain medications can throw a curveball and impact your ability to get there as swiftly as you'd like.

If you've got a million thoughts racing through your mind, those 17 minutes might not even scratch the surface. Sometimes it takes a bit of time to unwind and truly get into the groove. And that's perfectly okay.

Just like our penis-owning pals, the arousal of vulva owners is a bodily reaction.

When things start heating up, you'll notice increased blood flow to the vagina—butterflies, if you will. Alongside that, the vulva might swell a bit and your body might even produce some natural lubrication.

So, my dear vulva owners, embrace the journey, take your time and enjoy the ride.

Remember, we're all unique and there's no one-size-fits-all approach to arousal.

If in doubt, these toys are always a good idea:

3. There’s More to Lube Than… Lube.

I was today’s year old when I learned there are three different types of lube, each with its own unique perks and drawbacks.

To date, my experience has mostly consisted of slinking down that aisle, grabbing the nearest bottle I can find and making a beeline for the checkout.

But hey, progress is progress, right?

Before we dive into the land of lube, I want to clear something up: needing lube does not mean you’re any less attracted to your partner.

It's not a reflection of desire or attraction. There are countless reasons why you might choose to incorporate lube into your intimate space.

Regardless of the why, it's there to minimise friction, create smoother sensations, and elevate your sexual experiences to new heights.

OK, now onto the different types of lube:

Silicone-Based Lube.

This lube is in it for the long haul, offering a lasting lubricating effect.

It's also condom-safe and won't dissolve in water, so you can enjoy aquatic adventures without worries.

Just remember, silicone lube can be a bit tricky to clean and it's a no-go when it comes to silicone sex toys.

Water-Based Lube.

Consider this the versatile all-rounder of lubricants.

Water-based lubes are safe to use with toys and condoms, making them a reliable choice. They're also great for sensitive skin and often free of glycerin, parabens, and petrochemicals, which is a win for your body.

However, be aware that they can evaporate faster once applied, so keep that in mind for extended playtime.

Oil-Based Lube.

Get ready for a thick and luxurious experience with oil-based lube. It offers long-lasting lubrication that's sure to keep things smooth and sensual.

However, a word of caution: oil-based lubes can damage certain types of toys and should not be used with latex condoms.

So there you have it—the lowdown on lube. You’re welcome.

Embrace the lube that suits your needs:

4. Add Pressure for More Pleasure.

If you’re one of the few vulva owners who can have multiple orgasms with little to no effort, congratulations! You are officially a sex unicorn.

For everybody else, achieving multiple orgasms takes practice and patience. But guess what? They’re absolutely possible.

In fact, experts say that, unlike our penis-owning counterparts, vulva owners don’t necessarily require a refractory period. That means we can stay in the heightened state of arousal for longer and enjoy multiple orgasms in succession.

How, you ask? It all comes down to applying pressure post-orgasm.

Here's the deal: after the initial climax, you'll want to remove all stimulation for about 20 to 30 seconds. Give your vulva a well-deserved break from all sensation.

Then, it's time to get back in the game by adding pressure to the vulva, either with your own hand or your partner's. You can even switch things up and indulge in a sensual vulva massage.

The key is to introduce a new rhythm of stimulation that helps the vulva recover and reset, priming it for another mind-blowing O.

Take a time out with these relaxing accessories:

  • Le Wand Rechargeable Massager - a powerful, award-winning vibrator that doubles as a body massager.

  • LBDO Essensual Oil - 100% natural and luxurious, use this oil as lube or to add slip to a sensual massage.

5. Regular Masturbation Keeps Period Pain at Bay.

OK, maybe not completely at bay. But it turns out self-pleasure can actually help reduce period pain. Finally, some good news to brighten those monthly cycles.

When we orgasm, we release feel-good chemicals dopamine and oxytocin. These little wonders not only bring us a sense of pleasure and relaxation but also work their magic in reducing stress, soothing menstrual pain and calming those pesky cramps.

As an added bonus, they’re said to even contribute to better sleep. So, the next time Aunt Flo pays a visit, a solo session might be just the remedy you need.

Side note, you can also hear more honest, helpful discussion around clitoral stimulation and suction devices in this episode of After Dark on the Bite-Sized Beauty podcast below.

And if you’ve ever noticed you’re “in the mood” more during your monthly cycle, there’s science behind that, too!

Research suggests that during menstruation, estrogen levels rise while progesterone levels take a dip, resulting in a spike of testosterone—the hormone responsible for our heightened desire and, well, horniness.

So, my friend, if you were seeking an excuse for some extra self-love, look no further. Science has spoken and it's given us the green light to indulge.

Prioritise your pleasure with these best-sellers:

  • Vush Stimulation The Rose 2 - an external vibrator designed with self-romance in mind.
