It’s Been 2 Years Since I Bought My Dyson Hair Dryer, But Is It Still Worth the Hype?

dyson hair dryer review dyson hair dryer review

When the $40 hair dryer I purchased many moons ago started smelling funky and making strange noises, I decided it was time to let it go.

I had a few hairdryers in mind, including the iconic Dyson Supersonic hair dryer.

At over $500, the Dyson hair dryer ain't cheap...

I considered going for something more affordable, but after doing my Adore customer service team training with Dyson, I was persuaded to add the Dyson Supersonic to cart.

That was nearly two years ago. But wait for it... it's actually been five years since the company known for making vacuums brought out a Dyson hair dryer.

Now, the brand have just made their best-selling beauty product even better by re-launching the Supersonic with an 'anti-flyaways' attachment.

As in, an attachment that can deliver the smooth, shiny, frizz-free blow dry finish you get in-salon, but at home.

The Dyson supersonic reviews online are glowing, but is the Dyson hairdryer worth the money five years on?

And are the new Dyson hair dryer attachments as good as they sound?

Keep scrolling for my Dyson hairdryer review, plus all your questions about how it works and the Dyson attachments and uses.

What Is the Dyson Hair Dryer?

Dyson Supersonic Iron Fuchsia 605C isn’t just an ordinary hairdryer

Since launching in 2016, around 10.5 million Dyson Supersonic hair dryers have been sold globally.

It has a lightweight design, super fast motor for quick drying, and the game-changing Dyson Supersonic temperature technology that monitors the hair dryer's temperature 40 times per second.

It also comes in limited edition colourways, like the *stunning* Dyson Supersonic in Fuchsia/Nickel with Dark Blue case for Mother's Day above!

How Does the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Work?

Here are the main things you need to know about how the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer works:

  • Three speed settings thanks to the lightweight, powerful motor for fast styling.

  • Four heat settings: 28c, 60c, 80c and 100c, plus a cool shot button.

  • Measures temperature 40 times per second to minimise heat damage.

  • Comes with five Dyson hair dryer attachments to suit all hair types.

  • Also comes with a two-year warranty.

Two of the biggest things that make the Dyson Supersonic different to other hair dryers is the high-speed motor and the no extreme heat.

Having a powerful hair styling tool that also uses minimal heat helps to protect the hair, keeping it healthy and shiny. Genius.

Now, onto the five different attachments for the Dyson hair dryer.

1. Dyson Supersonic Styling Concentrator:

  • Suitable for styling with all hair types - I use this one the most for daily hair drying.

  • Re-designed to be wider and thinner to focus airflow for precision styling section by section.

  • Particularly great for styling fringes and face-framing layers, and cowlicks!

2. Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Diffuser:

  • Best for wavy, curly and coily hair types.

  • Re-engineered with longer prongs to disperse air more evenly around your curls and simulate natural drying.

  • Helps to define waves and curls, and reduce frizz.

3. Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Wide-Tooth Comb:

  • Best for curly and coily hair types.

  • Engineered with robust teeth to help lengthen hair as it dries.

  • Can be used to create volume and shape.

4. Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Gentle Air Attachment:

  • Best for all hair types, but designed for those with fine hair, thinning hair and sensitive scalps.

  • Gentle air attachment diffuses the air, creating a gentle, cooler airflow - while still drying hair fast.

5. Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Flyaway Attachment:

  • The newest attachment designed to replicate the salon styling technique of holding the round brush in one hand and the hair dryer in the other.

  • Coanda effect (the same technology the Dyson Airwrap uses) automatically hides flyaways under longer hairs in a single pass for a smooth, shiny finish.

  • Best for straight, wavy and curly hair types.

  • Use on dry hair as a finishing and/or second-day styling tool.

And yes, the attachment looks a bit like an elephant trunk. But a very clever one.

As for how to attach Dyson attachments and how to remove them, they're magnetised. Simply clip on and gently pull off, and rotate them however you like to style different sections of your hair.

How to clean Dyson attachments is also super simple. Use a soft brush or cloth to remove dust as needed, and to clean the filter once a month or so.

Note: The new Dyson Supersonic model comes with the flyaways attachment. If you already own an original model Dyson hair dryer (purchased pre-August 2021), you can buy the flyaways attachment direct on the Dyson website.

Wanna learn how to use the Dyson hair dryer?

The Dyson hairdryer instructions for use are very helpful, and include specific instructions for how to use the different Dyson attachments.

Click on your magnetic attachment of choice and turn the hair dryer on by flicking the little switch on top of the cold shot button.

To change the airflow or temperature, there are buttons on the pink circular end of the hair dryer that light up to indicate the different temperature and speed levels.

You can remove Dyson attachments once the tool has cooled, which doesn't take long thanks to the temperature tech.

You can watch the video below for my Dyson Supersonic demonstration using the new flyaways attachment on dry hair.

Hot tip for using the new flyaways attachment: Read the instructions.

Me being the patient woman I am, I skipped over the instructions and put the attachment on the wrong way... and was very shocked when my hair went in the opposite direction it was supposed to.

Position the attachment with the tail end of the curve facing down and away from the hair, with the actual curve sitting against the hair. The hair should be hugging the curve of the attachment when the tool is in use.

Using a low heat setting and a high speed setting, place the curve of the attachment at the top of your head and slowly work your way down, section by section.

Is the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Quiet?

I'm not saying this hair dryer is silent, but it is significantly less obnoxious than other hair dryers. The sound is strangely satisfying. Almost therapeutic.

Case in point: When I first started using it, I was really impressed that I could hear my podcast in the background while blow drying my hair.

*Not an essential requirement, but very handy when you've got several true crime podcasts on the go.

Thinking of buying the Dyson Airwrap or Supersonic?

You can read our full Dyson Airwrap review by Beauty IQ writer Alisha here, but let's recap how these two hair tools are different:

The Dyson Airwrap is a $799 styling tool that comes with curling, volume and smoothing brush attachments. It has a mini hair dryer attachment, but it's nowhere near as powerful as the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer.

If you want to be able to create several different styles in one tool, the Airwrap will do that for you.

The Dyson Supersonic is a $599 hair dryer, with different hair dryer styling attachments. If you want to be able to use a tool to primarily dry your hair, you'd choose the Dyson hair dryer.

Is a Dyson Hairdryer Worth the Money?

Let's be real - if you hardly use a hair dryer and it's likely to collect dust at the back of your bathroom cupboard, then you wouldn't get much cost-per-use value from a Dyson Supersonic.

Me? I use my Dyson hair dryer every time I wash my hair, which is about two or three times a week.

And now, I use the flyaways attachment to smooth and refresh my style on the days in between.

It's so light, powerful and quiet. As someone who frequently bleaches and colours their hair, I love I can dry it quickly and with minimal heat damage.

Compared to my previous hair dryer, the difference is astronomical.

Sounds nice, but is it $599 nice?

Look, I never thought I'd buy and love such an expensive hair tool, but once you use a Dyson hair dryer, it's hard to go back.

I think it's definitely worth the investment. And can confirm it still works just as well as it did on the day I bought it.
