Raise your hand if your skin is feeling drier than an overcooked roast chook right now?

I feel you. 'Tis the season for winter skin.

Winter skin is a semi-made up term to describe that uncomfortable tight, itchy, stretched, flaky look and feeling you get in the skin during the winter months.

But it's no coincidence. Did you know all of your favourite winter self care activities - blasting the heater, defrosting in a boiling hot bath and taking unnecessarily long hot showers - can dehydrate the crap out of your skin?

If you're not willing to give up said winter comforts, but also want your skin to feel soft, supple and comfortable, allow me to take you through a quick, zero-effort winter evening skincare routine..

But First, What Happens to Skin in Winter?

Winter is pretty synonymous with dry skin, but what we usually mean when we say our skin is 'dry', is our skin is 'dehydrated'.

They're not the same thing. True story.

While dry skin is a skin type and means skin naturally lacking oil, dehydrated skin is a temporary skin condition that occurs when our skin is lacking water.

It's super common in winter because in our quest for winter cosiness, we often end up dehydrating our poor skin barriers. Drier conditions and chilly winds can contribute here, too.

My Winter PM Skincare Routine.

So, how do you combat dehydrated skin in winter? You switch up your skin care.

Where you might go for a lightweight moisturising lotion, try subbing in a thicker cream or a face oil. Same goes for foaming cleansers - try an oil or a cream cleanser instead.

Or, if you're staying in on cold wintery nights, why not give yourself a mini at-home facial and slather yourself in oils and sheet masks while watching the telly? Trust me, it's a good idea.

So, sit back, light a goddamn candle because you're worth it - CIRCA Amber & Sandalwood Candle - 350g is currently burning at my place - and settle in for a super nourishing winter PM skincare routine.

You can watch my full routine in the YouTube video below, or keep scrolling for the quick(er) version.

Step 1: Use an oil cleanser as a part of your double cleansing routine to break down any sunscreen, makeup and general grime from the day.

DISCIPLE Night Shift AHA Oil Cleanser 100ml & Cloth contains fruit acids rich in alpha hydroxy acids or AHAs to very gently exfoliate the skin at the same time.

Really take your time massaging the product into the skin. Then, you're gonna wanna rinse that off with warm water, or use a damp cloth.

Step 2: Now your makeup is off, your second cleanser can properly cleanse the skin.

I like to massage Murad Prebiotic 4-in-1 Multi Cleanser 148mL onto damp skin for at least 60 seconds before rinsing off.

The hydrating formula doesn't leave my skin feeling stripped or squeaky (you know what I mean), but you can use any cream, gel or gentle foaming cleanser you like.

Step 3: Just because skin is dehydrated, doesn't mean it can't also be congested at the same time... so fun.

A mask is an easy way to specifically target congestion in certain areas of the face. For me, it's the t-zone - chin, jawline, nose and forehead.

Kiehl's Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque 125ml contains bentonite and kaolin clays to draw out and absorb any gunk lurking in your pores, but glycerin, aloe vera and oatmeal keep the skin feeling comfortable, not dry or tight.

If you have normal to oily or combination skin, go forth and whack this on wherever you're feeling congested. Because I have dry skin, I only apply the mask onto damp skin in the areas I need it.

Leave on for around 10-15 minutes. Grab a snack, live vicariously through your friend's night out Instagram stories. Do your thing. Remove using a damp cloth once the mask is almost dry.

Step 4: Next, we need to add hydration back into the skin. A sheet mask is a great way to do this - it's also really fun.

For this particular facial, I used Medik8 Ultimate Recovery Bio Cellulose Mask (6 Masks) - the name says it all. Ultimate recovery, for your face.

The bio cellulose sheet mask material is soaked in a hyaluronic acid and zinc PCA serum to help the skin retain its moisture content, and promote skin healing. You can actually whack one of these on after a professional skin treatment, or during the day before makeup if you're going somewhere and want your foundation to look glowy and flawless.

Smooth the mask over the skin and tweak the positioning so everything's in place - it's crucial to get the mouth area right so you can eat with this on.

The end result gives me serial killer vibes. This is a great time to scare someone you live with. Leave this on for 15-30 minutes.

Pro tip: Work a hair oil or hair mask through your dry, crunchy ends while you wait for your skin to soak up the mask.

Kérastase Elixir Ultime Beautifying Hair Oil is basically liquid gold in a bottle. It smells so good. You can actually use this hair oil a few different ways like as a pre-shampoo treatment or a heat protectant for a super shiny finish, but I'm using it as a leave-in conditioning treatment on my ends.

Step 5: Peel the sheet mask off and rub any excess serum into the skin - don't forget the backs of your hands, and your neck and décolletage, too.

Then, double down on reinforcing the moisture with a super hydrating serum or oil. Or both.

DISCIPLE Good Skin Face Oil-Serum is rich in essential fatty acids and essential oils. It also smells like tea tree and lavender. Massaging it into my skin makes me feel like I'll sleep well and wake up with clear sinuses.

Step 6: Chuck on a thick, nourishing lip balm - Lanolips 101 Ointment The Original Multipurpose Superbalm is an all-time favourite. I like to pop a bit on either side of my nose where it gets dry, too.

Step 7: Marinate in your hydration and self care smugness while bingeing an entire season of a TV show. Enjoy!
