Who doesn’t love a two-in-one product?

I’m a sucker for anything that cuts out steps in my beauty routine and saves me time.

It's for this reason I was intrigued to try skincare brand Dermalogica's fancy new face mask that promises to exfoliate and hydrate at the same time, in five minutes flat.

Drum roll please... It's the Dermalogica Hydro Masque Exfoliant.

Keep on scrolling to find out everything you need to know about this very cool new product.

What Is the Dermalogica Hydro Masque Exfoliant?

The Dermalogica Hydro Masque is an exfoliating mask for dry skin that gets rid of dead skin cells and gives you that lovely post-exfoliation glow, without the typical harshness common with a lot of exfoliating products.

Also, it's not a sheet mask. This is the kind of face mask that comes in a tube. You can pop it on in the shower, or while you’re washing your face in the sink, whenever your skin feels dry or dull, and needs a little pick-me-up.

How Does The Dermalogica Hydro Masque Exfoliant Work?

This mask is designed to be applied one to two times a week. You can pop this on in the shower while you’re washing your body or shampooing your hair, or in the bathroom before brushing your teeth, putting on deodorant etc.

I think it's best done while having one of those longer do-everything showers. You know, the ones in which you wash your hair, shave your legs, do a body scrub and come up with all your great ideas.

Now, let's talk about the texture. The formula feels like a thick, nourishing moisturiser, except it’s mixed with these adorable little grey spheres that look like tiny bouncy bubbles.

See? The texture reminds me of a really creamy shaving foam.

After washing your face as per usual in the shower, pop a generous amount of this onto your face and neck area. As soon as you start to rub the mask between your hands, you’ll notice the spheres dissolve and turn into a very fine and gentle physical exfoliant.

Keep massaging the mask into your face until the spheres feel like they’ve completely disappeared, then let the mask sit for three to five minutes while it does its thing.

Simply wash off when you’re ready and voila! Your skin should feel softer and smoother, but certainly not dry, tight or irritated.

Dermalogica Hydro Mask Exfoliant Ingredients.

All the active ingredients in this mask have been included to exfoliate the skin in the gentlest way possible, while also nourishing and hydrating at the same time.

Here’s a breakdown of the main active ingredients:

1. Bamboo Spheres.

These are those cute little bubbles I was talking about before. They are rich in minerals and natural antioxidants, and once dissolved upon activation, provide the mask’s gentle physical exfoliation benefits.

2. Snow Mushroom.

This is an awesome hydrating ingredient and the part of the mask that helps give the skin a big nourishing drink. Snow mushroom, often referred to as snow fungus, holds 450 times its own weight in water and also contains loads of antioxidants and vitamin D.

3. Jojoba, Sunflower and Safflower Seeds.

Three famously hydrating ingredients that help to strengthen the skin’s natural barrier and keep moisture locked in.

4. Sugar Beets.

This root plant is packed full of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, which help with skin elasticity and collagen production, as well as hydration and sealing in moisture.

5. Cucumber Extract.

The mask gets its distinct scent from cucumbers, which give a soothing, refreshing and cooling effect to the skin.

Dermalogica Microfoliant vs Hydro Masque Exfoliant.

And if you’re wondering how this mask is different to Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant or Superfoliant?

Well, those products contain more intense active ingredients and are better suited to people who are after vigorous chemical and physical exfoliation.

Plus, they aren’t specifically designed to hydrate and exfoliate at the same time. Make sense?

My Dermalogica Exfoliant Review.

I found this product super easy to use and I love that you can just pop it on in the shower and then rinse it off, as opposed to having to find another five minutes post-shower to do a face mask.

Here are the spheres up close, and on my face!

If you find many exfoliating products feel way too harsh on your skin or leave you feeling tight and dry, this is a great option. It’s also perfect for those with super dry or sensitive skin who find most exfoliants simply make the skin feel more inflamed.

People with acne-prone skin might also enjoy this, as the physical exfoliant is extremely fine and gentle, so it’s unlikely to aggravate breakouts or cause the skin to break.

Personally, I recently overdid with the intense exfoliating AHAs and BHAs and was under strict instructions to reduce my use of chemical exfoliants. This product was a great way to still get in that gentle exfoliation once a week, without pissing off my facialist.

Happy masking!
