The Best Skin Care Routine For Acne and Oily Skin

If your skin looks like a glazed donut by 3pm, then it might be time to adopt a routine designed for oily skin.

Don’t get us wrong, there are actually many benefits to having oily skin. That oil or excess sebum actually keeps your skin softer, and smoother for longer. That being said, oily skin can also lead to more congestion and sometimes even acne.

To help you take a step in the right direction is our Brand and Content Manager Hannah Furst, who has put together a routine using products geared towards oily skin types.

Oily & Acne Prone Skincare Routine For 30s


Tips for Oily & Acne Prone Skin:

  • If you have oily or acne prone skin, it’s important to cleanse diligently without stripping the skin. Stripping the skin will only encourage further oil production, which can lead to more breakouts. We recommend double cleansing, a technique where you remove makeup with an oil based cleanser, before going in with a gel or foam cleanser to remove the last traces of product. 

  • Use an oil based cleanser on dry skin to remove makeup, as oil separates with water.  

  • When you begin using a Retinol try building up slowly in strength, introducing it to the skin gradually. 


How do I minimise and prevent breakouts?

One of the biggest issues with oily skin is the experience of breakouts, which can occur when the skin’s overproduction of sebum begins to clog the pores.

Some of the best ways to deal with these issues are improved and regular cleansing, changing your exfoliation game, upping your hydration to balance your oils and using skin care products catered to oily skin

We recommend making these changes as a preventative measure, as acne can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which can be difficult to lift.

☾ Night Skin Care Routine for Oily Skin

Step 1: Start with an oil based cleanser

Step 1: Start with an oil based cleanser

Apply 2-3 pumps of the Pai Light Work Rosehip Cleansing Oil to dry skin to remove makeup, dirt and oil. This lightweight formula is extremely nourishing and free from irritants that might exacerbate acne prone skin types. Add a few drops of water to formula and massage into the face before rinsing.

To double cleanse, now apply several pumps of the Aspect Exfoliating Cleanser and massage into the skin before rinsing. This foaming cleanser contains Lactic and Salicylic acid, so it exfoliates while it cleanses, getting deep into the pores. You can use this cleanser 1-2 times a week to start out with, alternating it with a gentle cleanser like the asap gentle cleansing gel.

Once or twice a week use a chemical exfoliant like the D'Lumiere Esthetique AHA 20% Oily Skin Solution. This Glycolic acid treatment helps clear pores while hydrating the skin, which is perfect for those with oily skin. Apply one pump to a cotton round and swipe across the face, neck and chest. Try to use this on a night you are not using your exfoliating cleanser, so you avoid stripping away too much oil.

Step 4: Low strength retinol

Using a low strength retinol can help promote cell turnover and help control oily production. Try the SkinCeuticals Retinol 0.3% or the PCA Skin Intensive Clarity Treatment: 0.5% Pure Retinol Night once a week on a night you aren’t using an exfoliating product. You should also introduce a retinol product into your routine slowly to avoid irritation. Always follow with an SPF the next day, as retinol makes your skin more sensitive to the sun.

Finish your P.M. routine with the Beauté Pacifique Oil-Free Moisturizer, which offers nourishment and protection. Massage a small amount of this lightweight moisturiser into your skin and pair with the Beauté Pacifique Puffy Eyes Gel if necessary. 



☀ Morning Skin Care Routine for Oily Skin

Step 1: Start with a gentle cleanser

To start your day, rather than using your exfoliating cleanser, try a gentle cleanser like the asap gentle cleansing gel to clear and hydrate the skin.

Next, apply 4-5 drops of the SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF to the face, neck and chest. This Vitamin C serum designed for oil skin provides antioxidant protection and helps to fade pigmentation.

Step 3: Rebalance oils

Niacinamide helps to boost hydration and rebalance oil levels. We recommend trying the Aspect Extreme B 17, applying just a pea sized amount.

Step 4: Hydration intensifier

Oily skin is often really just dehydrated. Boost your hydration levels and balance oils with the SkinCeuticals Hyaluronic Acid Intensifier 30ml. This serum will help improve your skin’s plumpness, firmness and texture. Apply 4-6 drops once or twice daily to your face, neck and chest.

If you require a spot treatment we recommend using the SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age Defense Serum, which is packed with Salicylic acid to reduce pore size and smooth skin texture. Apply directly to your acne, or 4-5 drops to your complexion for a more intense exfoliating treatment.

The Ultra Violette Clean Screen SPF30 Skinscreen mattifies the skin and reduces inflammation. We recommend using several pumps of this product to your face at the end of your routine everyday!

Remember, SPF is only one part of sun protection! Always seek shade, and wear sunnies, a hat and protective clothing. Use sufficient sunscreen for all unprotected areas and reapply sunscreen as directed. Frequent re-application or use in accordance with directions is required for effective sun protection. Always read the label. Prolonged high-risk sun exposure should be avoided.
